  • A workman at a winery in Les Riceys, France, discovers a hoard of 497 US $20 gold coins in the attic. The coins are dated 1851 to 1928, and valued at about $1 million. [436.28]

  • In Saint Cloud, Florida, a house is demolished. Found in the walls are glass jars containing a total of 2000 silver coins, worth US$19,000 in silver value alone. [489.27]

  • The US Mint in Philadelphia surpasses its record for number of coins struck in a single day: 42.44 million. [487.25]
August 5
  • (to August 9) At the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois, the American Numismatic Association holds the 2014 World's Fair of Money. 12,600 people attend. The U.S. Mint launches the commemorative dual-dated gold Kennedy half dollar. Some auction highlights:

The recommended them for the dollar reverse is "Maria Tallchief American Indians in Ballet". Recommended individuals to be recognized on the quarters are American pilot Bessie Coleman, journalist Jovita Idár, Hawaiian composer Edith Kanaka'ole, and former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.
