  • 2004 - Kenneth Bigley, the British hostage held by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, an Iraqi insurgent, is killed after a failed escape attempt.
  • 2004 - Suicide bombers detonate two bombs at the Red Sea resort of Taba, Egypt, killing 34 people, mainly Israeli tourists and Egyptian workers.
  • 2004 - Martha Stewart begins serving a five-month sentence for insider trading, at the Alderson Federal Prison Camp in West Virginia.
  • 2005 - In Pakistan, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurs. At least 86,000 people killed, more than 69,000 injured and extensive damage in northern Pakistan. An estimated 4 million people in the area were left homeless.
  • 2007 - Track and field star Marion Jones surrenders her five Olympic medals she won in the 2000 Sydney Games after admitting to doping.
  • 2007 - A consortium of banks (Royal Bank of Scotland, Santander of Spain, and the Dutch-Belgian Fortis bank) announce that shareholders of Dutch bank ABN AMRO have accepted its 72 billion euro (US$101 billion) takeover offer, the world's biggest banking transaction.
  • 2008 - The British Treasury announces a bail-out plan for British banks, investing up to 50 billion pounds (US$87 billion) of public money to increase bank capital in exchange for preference shares, making available at least 200 billion pounds in Treasury bills in exchange for less liquid assets of banks, and guaranteeing up to 250 billion pounds of new bank-obtained funding.
  • 2008 - Central banks around the world cut interest rates in unison for the first time ever. The coordinated rate cuts are made by financial policymakers in response to the global credit crisis. Central banks of the USA, China, Europe, Great Britain, Canada, Sweden, and Switzerland all cut their main lending rate by half a percentage point.
  • 2008 - The Tokyo stock market drops 9.4 percent; the Hong Kong stock market drops 8.2 percent.
  • 2008 - Death of George Emil Palade, Romanian cell biologist, Nobel Prize laureate (born 1912).
  • 2009 - A 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurs about 300km north-northwest of Vanuatu, followed by a 7.1 earthquake an hour later.
  • 2018 - The IPCC releases its Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5C, warning that "rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society" are needed to ensure that global warming is kept below 1.5 degrees Celcius.
  • 2019 - The Government of Ecuador, headed by President Lenín Moreno, moves to Guayaquil as the Carondelet Palace in Quito is overtaken by protesters.
  • 2020 - Death of Ali Khalif Galaydh, 8th Prime Minister of Somalia (born 1941).
  • 2021 - The Nobel Prize Committee announces that the winner of the Peace Prize is journalists Dmitry Muratov of Russia and Maria Ressa of the Philippines.
  • 2021 - (to October 9) The 2021 Czech legislative election is held, with the main opposition coalition alliance of SPOLU and Pirates and Mayors gaining a legislative majority.
  • 2023 - Death of Burt Young at age 83 in Los Angeles, California; boxer, actor (Paulie Pennino - Rocky movie (1976), Once Upon a Time in America movie (1984)).
