  • 1471 - The Battle of Brunkeberg takes place, north of Stockholm, between forces of Sten Sture and Ivar Axelsson on one side, and forces of the Union King Kristian, German soldiers, and many Swedish nobles on the other. The Sture forces command a decisive victory. Danish King Kristian is forced to sail back to Denmark, and make peace.

  • 2009 - Turkey and Armenia sign an accord normalising relations, after nearly 100 years of hostility following the deportation from the Ottoman Empire and deaths of hundreds of thousands of Armenians in 1915.
  • 2010 - Netherlnds Antilles dissolves, creating independent nations Curaçao and Sint Maarten within the kingdom of the Netherlands, and the Caribbean Netherlands.
  • 2013 - Delegates from some 140 countries and territories sign the Minamata Treaty, a UNEP treaty designed to protect human health and the environment from emissions and releases of mercury and mercury compounds.
  • 2015 - A series of suicide bombings kills at least 100 people at a peace rally in Ankara, Turkey, and injures more than 400 others.
  • 2018 - Hurricane Michael makes landfall at Mexico Beach, Florida, with winds of 155 mph and a minimum pressure of 919 mbar. It is the most intense hurricane to hit the mainland United States since Camille in 1969.
  • 2019 - Swedish Academy awards Nobel Prize in literature for 2018 to Olga Tokarczuk of Poland, and for 2019 to Peter Handke of Austria.
  • 2020 - Armenia and Azerbaijan agree on a ceasefire in the ongoing Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
