  • 1979 - At Montevideo, Uruguay, the International Olympic Committee adopts a resolution, whereby Taiwan Olympic and sports teams will participate with the name Chinese Taipei in future Olympics Games and international sports tournaments and championships.
  • 1980 - Mary Michael, actress (Birdie - Wonderful John Acton), dies at age 77.
  • 1982 - Cameroon president Ahmadou Ahidjo resigns, replaced by Paul Biya.
  • 1983 - In Eastern China, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake occurs. Thirty-four people killed, about 2,200 injured and about 3,300 houses destroyed in the Heze-Dongming area of Shandong Province.
  • 1984 - U.S. presidential election: Ronald Reagan defeats Walter F. Mondale with 59 percent of the popular vote, the highest since Richard Nixon's 61 percent victory in 1972. Reagan carries 49 states in the electoral college; Mondale wins only his home state of Minnesota by a mere 3,761 vote margin, and the District of Columbia.
  • 1984 - In the USA, voters approve introduction of state lotteries in California, Oregon, Missouri, and West Virginia. Pari-mutuel racing betting is approved in Missouri. Colorado and Arkansas defeat proposed casino introductions. Oregon votes to amend constitution to prohibit casinos.
  • 1985 - 22nd Space Shuttle Mission (61A) -Challenger 9- lands at Edwards Air Force Base.
  • 1985 - Exploratory well at Ranger, Texas, explodes spilling 6.3 million gallons of oil.
  • 1985 - General Jaruzelski elected Poland's head of state.
  • 1985 - Death of Joel Crothers of a heart attack at age 44; actor (Dark Shadows, Secret Storm, Another World, Edge of Night, Somerset, Santa Barbara).
  • 1986 - US President Ronald Reagan signs landmark immigration reform bill.
  • 1986 - A British International Helicopters Boeing 234LR Chinook crashes 2.5 miles east of Sumburgh Airport killing 45 people. This is the deadliest civilian helicopter crash on record.
  • 1986 - New York's WOR-TV pays a record (for syndicated TV show) $182,000 per episode of The Cosby Show, for the fall, 1988 season. Previous record was $80,000 per show for Cheers.
  • 1987 - Ross R Barnett, American lawyer/politician (Governor-Democrat-Mississippi), dies at age 89.
  • 1987 - William C Pahlmann, interior decorator (Four Seasons, New York City), dies at age 80.

  • 1988 - In the Burma-China Border Region, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake occurs. 730 people killed, 3,900 injured, 267,000 homeless, 29 reservoirs severely damaged and 67 percent of the public buildings destroyed in the Lancang-Menglian area, China.
  • 1988 - Steve Jones wins New York men's marathon; Grete Waitz 9th women's title.
  • 1989 - Birth of Mercedes Kastner; actress (Beverly Hills 90210 TV show).
  • 1990 - Fire destroys some of Universal Studio's stages.
  • 1990 - In southern Iran, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake occurs. At least 22 people killed, 100 injured, 21,000 homeless and 18 villages severely damaged.
  • 1991 - The KGB officially stops operations.
  • 1995 - Death of Aneta Corsaut of cancer at age 62; actress (Helen Crump - Andy Griffith Show, Judge - Matlock).
  • 1997 - In Southern Quebec, Canada, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake occurs. Felt as far south as Ottawa, Ontario and as far east as Edmundston, New Brunswick. Felt in western Maine, northern New Hampshire, northern Vermont and parts of northeastern New York in the United States.
  • 1999 - Australians vote to keep the monarch as their head of state.
  • 2001 - John Bennett of the United Kingdom dives 307.8m deep at Escarcia point, Puerto Galero in the Philippines, deepest scuba dive to date.
  • 2001 - FOX begins airing episodes of the TV show 24.
  • 2002 - The U.S. Federal Reserve System drops its primary discount rate by 50 basis points to 0.75 percent, putting the real interest rate solidly below the inflation rate.
  • 2003 - Death of Mike Lockwood (Crash Holly), WWE wrestler (born 1971).
  • 2004 - The Ufton Nervet rail crash in Berkshire, England kills seven people.
  • 2004 - In Côte d'Ivoire, National Army bombings kill nine people, including French United Nations soldiers. French United Nations forces retaliate by destroying the National Army's air force.
  • 2005 - A tornado hits western Kentucky and southwestern Indiana, killing at least 22.

  • 2008 - St. James Auctions sells a unique Russian 1755 Elizabeth I gold 20-ruble pattern coin graded AU-58 by NGC for 1,782,500 pounds (US$2.82 million), world record price for a non-US coin.
  • 2009 - A US Army major opens fire on fellow soldiers at the Fort Hood military base in Texas, killing 13 people and injuring 30.
  • 2009 - A CDN$50-million Lotto Max lottery jackpot is won by a person in Pine Falls, Manitoba, Canada.
  • 2010 - The government of Myanmar releases opposition leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest.
