  • 1940 - RKO Radio Pictures world premieres Disney's third animated feature film, Fantasia, at New York's Broadway Theater. The film introduces stereophonic sound to motion pictures via a special sound system called Fantasound. This is Mickey Mouse' feature film debut, in the segment The Sorcerer's Apprentice.
  • 1941 - Birth of Dack Rambo in Delano, California, USA; actor (Guns of Will Sonnett, Dallas).
  • 1941 - Birth of Mel Stottlemyre in Washington, USA; pitcher (New York Yankees)/pitching coach (New York Mets).
  • 1941 - (1538 hours) In the Mediterranean, German submarine U-81 fires three torpedoes at British aircraft carrier Ark Royal. One hits the ship below the superstructure, cutting off all communication from the bridge. One crewman dies in the blast.
  • 1942 - Birth of Beth Brickell in Camden, Arkansas, USA; actress (Gentle Ben).
  • 1942 - Minimum draft age in the USA lowered from 21 to 18.
  • 1942 - In North Africa, the British 8th Army takes Tobruk.
  • 1943 - Birth of John Paul Hammond in New York City, New York, USA; blues singer ("So Many Roads").
  • 1946 - First artificial snow produced from a natural cloud, Mount Greylock, Massachusetts.

  • 1956 - US Supreme Court strikes down segregation of races on public buses.
  • 1960 - Fire in movie theater kills 152 children (Amude, Spain).
  • 1961 - Wally Brown, actor (Jed Fame - Cimarron City), dies at age 57.
  • 1964 - Bob Petit (Saint Louis Hawks) becomes first NBA player to score 20,000 points.
  • 1965 - Cruise ship Yarmouth Castle, on an overnight cruise from Miami, Florida, to the Bahamas, burns and sinks off Bahamas, killing 87 of 545 passengers and crew. A fire broke out in an unoccupied cabin used for storage, quickly destroying the bridge, radio room, and some lifeboats.
  • 1965 - Brazil introduces new monetary unit, the cruzeiro novo.
  • 1969 - US Vice President Spiro T Agnew accuses network TV news depths of bias and distortion.
  • 1970 - Cyclone kills estimated 300,000 in Chittagong, Bangladesh.
  • 1970 - Lieutenant General Hafez al-Assad becomes Prime Minister of Syria following military coup.
  • 1970 - US Vice President Spiro Agnew calls TV executives "impudent snobs".

  • 1971 - The American space probe Mariner 9 becomes the first spacecraft to orbit another planet, swinging into its planned trajectory around Mars without a hitch.

  • 1973 - Oakland Athletics' Reggie Jackson wins American League Most Valuable Player unanimously.

  • 1982 - Korean boxer Duk Koo Kim fatally injured when knocked out by Ray Mancini.
  • 1982 - The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is dedicated in Washington, D.C., after a march to its site by thousands of Vietnam War veterans.
  • 1983 - The first United States cruise missiles arrive at Greenham Common Airbase in England amid protests from peace campaigners.
  • 1983 - Death of "Alvin" Junior Samples at age 57 from a heart attack; country singer, comedian (Hee Haw TV show).
  • 1985 - Dwight Gooden, youngest 20-game winner in Major League Baseball, wins Cy Young award.
  • 1985 - Nevado del Ruiz volcano erupts, killing an estimated 23,000 people in Colombia.

  • 1989 - Death of the Prince of Liechtenstein, Franz Josef, near Grabs, Switzerland. He ruled Liechtenstein from 1938-1989.
  • 1989 - Death of Canadian champion swimmer Victor Davis. He held three world records, four Olympic medals, 29 national titles, and 16 medals from international competitions; member of the Order of Canada.
  • 1990 - The World Wide Web begins, as the first known Web page is written.
  • 1992 - Columbia releases the film Bram Stoker's Dracula to theaters.
  • 1992 - Buena Vista releases the film Aladdin to theaters.
  • 1994 - The first passengers travel through the Channel Tunnel between England and France.
  • 1994 - A country-wide referendum is held to decide if Sweden should join the European Union. 52.2 percent vote yes, 46.9 percent vote no.
  • 1996 - Death of Bill Doggett at age 80; pianist and organist ("Honky Tonk" (1956)).
  • 1997 - Disney's The Lion King musical play opens at the New Amsterdam theater in New York.
  • 1998 - In Southern Iran, a magnitude 5.4 earthquake occurs. Five people killed, 105 injured and at least 850 houses damaged by the earthquake and landslides.
  • 1998 - The ball hit by Babe Ruth for his first home run hit in Yankee Stadium is sold at an auction for US126,500.
  • 1998 - (to November 14) U.S. President Bill Clinton orders airstrikes on Iraq, then calls them off at the last minute when Iraq promises once again to "unconditionally" cooperate with UNSCOM.
  • 1999 - Death of Donald Mills at age 84 of complications from pneumonia; singer (The Mills Brothers, 2,000 recordings, 50 million copies).
  • 2001 - The World Trade Organization ends a four-day ministerial conference in Doha, Qatar.
  • 2001 - In the first such act since World War II, U.S. President George W. Bush signs an executive order allowing military tribunals against any foreigners suspected of having connections to terrorist acts or planned acts against the United States.
  • 2001 - Konami releases the Metal Gear Solid 2 video game for the PlayStation 2 in the USA. 1.8 million copies are sold in the first two weeks.
  • 2001 - NBC airs the 200th episode of the TV show Frasier.
  • 2002 - Iraq agrees to the terms of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1441.
  • 2002 - The Greek-owned Prestige oil tanker breaks in two and sinks off the northwestern coast of Spain, dumping most of its cargo of 89 million litres of oil.
  • 2004 - After six days of intense battles, the Iraqi town of Fallujah is fully occupied by U.S. forces.
  • 2005 - Andrew Stimpson, a 25-year old British man, is reported as the first person proven to have been 'cured' of HIV.
  • 2005 - Death of Eddie Guerrero, Mexican-American professional wrestler (born 1967).
  • 2006 - Delmon Young is suspended for 50 games by the International League for throwing a bat which hit a replacement umpire in the chest.
  • 2006 - The New York Mets stage a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction of the US$800 million 45,000-seat CitiField ballpark.
  • 2006 - The BBWAA votes Jason Verlander of the Detroit Tigers as American League Rookie of the Year Award.
  • 2007 - An explosion hits the south wing of the House of Representatives of the Philippines in Quezon City, north of Manila, killing four people, including Basilan Congressman Wahab Akbar, and wounding six others.
  • 2007 - Parliamentary elections in Denmark. Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen's Center-right coalition wins a third term.
  • 2009 - NASA scientists announce that last month's experiment to find water on the Moon was a major success, revealing ice and water vapor in the debris field of smashing a rocket into a crater.
  • 2009 - Sony releases the film 2012 to theaters.
  • 2010 - Myanmar opposition politician Aung San Suu Kyi is released from her house arrest in Yangon. She had been locked up since 1989.
  • 2015 - Multiple terrorist attacks claimed by Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in Paris, France, result in 130 fatalities.
  • 2017 - Death of David Poisson, French alpine skier (born 1982).
  • 2017 - Death of Bobby Doerr, American baseball player and coach (born 1918).
  • 2019 - In London, England, would-be thieves attempt to steal two Rembrandt paintings from the Dulwich Picture Gallery, but are stopped by police.
  • 2019 - Death of Raymond Poulidor at age 83; French cyclist (189 victories over 18 years).
