  • 1979 - Los Angeles Kings' Charley Simmer fails on 8th penalty shot against New York Islanders.
  • 1981 - CBS-TV airs the first episode of TV show Simon & Simon.
  • 1983 - Palestinian Liberation Organization exchanges six Israeli prisoners for 4,500 Palestinians and Lebanese.
  • 1987 - In Southern California, magnitude 6.5 and 6.7 earthquakes occur, about 12 hours apart. Felt throughout much of southern California from San Diego and Los Angeles to Las Vegas, Nevada and Tempe, Arizona. Also felt at Tijuana and Ensenada, Mexico.

  • 1991 - Death of Freddie Mercury of AIDS at age 46; lead singer (Queen) (born 1946).

  • 1992 - In the People's Republic of China, a China Southern Airlines domestic flight crashes, killing all 141 people on-board.
  • 1993 - Fox releases the film Mrs. Doubtfire to theaters.
  • 1993 - In the United Kingdom, 11-year-olds Robert Thompson and Jon Venables are convicted of the child murder of 2-year-old James Bulger of Liverpool.
  • 1994 - Death of Charles Hazlitt Upham at age 84 in New Zealand; nominated for three Victoria Crosses (won one) for fighting in World War II.
  • 1996 - The Toronto Argonauts defeat the Edmonton Eskimos 43-37 to win the 84th Grey Cup at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton, Ontario. The game is notable for the heavy snowfall that took place, resulting in the game being dubbed "The Snow Bowl".
  • 1998 - America Online announces an agreement to acquire Netscape Communications for US$4.2 billion in stock.
  • 2001 - Former German Minister of Defense, Gerhard Stoltenberg (CDU) dies of cancer at his home in Bonn-Bad Godesberg.
  • 2002 - The Montreal Alouettes win the Canadian Football League Championship for the first time since relocating from Baltimore, defeating the host Edmonton Eskimos 25-16 in the 90th Grey Cup at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta.
  • 2002 - Death of John Rawls, American political theorist (born 1921).
  • 2003 - The High Court in Glasgow imposes a minimum sentence of 27 years for Al Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi, the Libyan convicted of bombing Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.
  • 2005 - The Licensing Act 2003 comes into force in England and Wales, introducing flexibility in the hours during which alcoholic beverages may be sold.
  • 2005 - Death of Pat Morita at age 73; comedian, American actor (Arnold - Happy Days, Karate Kid movies).

  • 2015 - Turkey shoots down a Russian fighter jet in the first case of a NATO member destroying a Russian aircraft since the 1950s.
  • 2016 - The Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People's Army sign a revised peace deal, bringing an end to the Colombian conflict.
  • 2017 - A mosque attack in Sinai, Egypt kills 305 worshippers and leaves hundreds more wounded.
  • 2019 - A plane crashes shortly after takeoff in a densely populated area of Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo, killing all 19 people on board and at least 10 more on the ground.
  • 2020 - Death of Mamadou Tandja, 7th President of Niger (born 1938).
  • 2021 - German coalition government forms, of Social Democrats, Green Party, and Free Democrats, with chancellor Olaf Scholz.
