  • 2003 - At auction in New York City, a Canadian 1911 silver dollar pattern sells for US$1 million. A 1936 dot 1-cent sells for $353,000, a new record for any North American small cent.
  • 2004 - In England, serial killer Harold Shipman is found hanged in his cell at Wakefield Prison, four years after being convicted of murdering 15 patients in Cheshire. Shipman was blamed for the deaths of a further 200 patients at an inquest 18 months ago and some reports claimed that he may have murdered as many as 400 or 500 people.
  • 2005 - Armed militants enter Israel from Gaza and open fire near the border, killing six people and wounding five others. Hamas and Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades claim joint responsibility for the attack.
  • 2005 - American Major League Baseball and the Players Association agree in principle on a stricter steroid-testing policy. The new program will randomly test players year-round.
  • 2005 - Milwaukee Brewers owners unanimously approve the US$223 million sale of the baseball franchise to Los Angeles investor Mark Attanasio.
  • 2006 - Johnny Estrada agrees to a US$2 million, one-year contract to catch for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

  • 2009 - German Chancellor Angela Merkel unveils an economic stimulus package worth about 50 billion euros (US$67 billion).
  • 2009 - Ethiopian military forces begin pulling out of Somalia, where they have tried to maintain order for nearly two years.
  • 2009 - Citigroup and Morgan Stanley agree to combine their brokerages, with Morgan Stanley paying Citigroup US$2.7 billion for a 51 percent stake in the joint venture. The new Morgan Stanley Smith Barney will have US$1.7 trillion in client assets.
  • 2012 - Costa Cruises' Costa Concordia cruise ship with 3200 passengers and 1000 crew strikes a rock near Isola del Giglio, Italy, cutting a 230-foot gash in the ship. The ship takes on water, lists severly, loses all power, ends up grounded on its side, with 32 dead.
  • 2016 - Iran releases US Navy boats and crew that were picked up January 12 in Iranian waters.
  • 2016 - US Powerball lottery is US$1.6 billion, won by three ticket buyers in California, Florida, and Tennessee.
  • 2017 - Death of Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon, British photographer (born 1930).
  • 2021 - In Lyon, France, the first transplant of both arms and shoulders is performed on an Icelandic patient at the Édouard Herriot Hospital.
