  • 1998 - Iraq announces its intention to fire upon U.S. and British warplanes that patrol the northern and southern "no-fly zones".
  • 1999 - Royal Caribbean International's Voyager of the Seas cruise ship sets a new record for most guests on a single cruise: 3497.
  • 2000 - Death of Jason Robards Junior of mestasticized lung cancer at age 78; Oscar, Tony, and Emmy-winning actor (Inherit the Wind (1998), The Atlanta Child Murders, Mark Twain and Me, Sakharov, FDR: The Last Year, Washington: Behind Closed Doors).
  • 2001 - Death of Nigel Hawthorne at age 72 of a heart attack; British actor (Yes Minister , Yes, Prime Minister).
  • 2003 - In Southeastern Iran, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake occurs, the deadliest earthquake in 2003, likely the largest earthquake in this area in 2000 years. About 31,000 people killed, 30,000 injured, 75,600 homeless and 85 percent of buildings damaged or destroyed in the Bam area.
  • 2004 - One of the worst natural disasters in recorded history hits Southeast Asia when the strongest earthquake in 40 years hits the entire Indian Ocean region. The massive 9.3 magnitude earthquake, epicentered just off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, generates enormous tsunami waves that crash into the coastal areas of 14 nations including Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Malaysia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Indonesia. 228,000 people are killed or missing in 12 countries, and 1.7 million are left homeless. The tsunami causes more casualties than any other in recorded history and is recorded nearly world-wide on tide gauges in the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
  • 2004 - The re-run of the second round of the Ukrainian presidential election takes place. Opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko is declared the victor.
  • 2004 - Death of Mieszko Talarczyk, Swedish guitarist/musician (Nasum) (born 1974).
  • 2005 - ABC-TV airs the last Monday Night Football after 36 years.
  • 2006 - Death of Gerald R. Ford, 38th President of the United States (born 1913).
  • 2006 - An oil pipeline is blown up in Nigeria's commercial capital, Lagos, killing at least 200 people.
  • 2006 - The Hengchun earthquake in Taiwan kills two people, damages about 15 historical buildings and several undersea cable, disrupting Internet and IDD telecommunication services in Asia.
  • 2010 - Death of Salvador Jorge Blanco, 48th President of the Dominican Republic (born 1926).
  • 2014 - Death of Leo Tindemans, 43rd Prime Minister of Belgium (born 1922).
  • 2017 - Honduras and Panama announce that they will move their Israeli embassy to Jerusalem.
  • 2017 - Death of Johnny Bower, Canadian ice hockey player (born 1924).
  • 2018 - After weeks of losses the Dow Jones Industrial Average posts its largest ever one-day point gain: 1,086 points.
  • 2021 - Death of Desmond Tutu at age 90 of cancer; Anglican archbishop (Cape Town, South Africa), writer (No Future Without Forgiveness (1999)), Nobel Peace Price recipient.
  • 2021 - Death of Karolos Papoulias, 6th President of Greece (born 1929).
  • 2021 - Death of Sarah Weddington at age 76; American lawyer (Roe v. Wade).
