  • 2000 - In the Philippines, 24-year-old Onel De Guzman releases a virus that he had proposed creating as part of his undergraduate thesis. The email message was sent with subject "ILOVEYOU", and attachment "LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU". When opened, the virus activates, sending the message and attachment to every name on the email program's address list.
  • 2000 - FOX airs the final episode of Party of Five TV show.
  • 2002 - Sony releases the film Spider-Man to theaters.
  • 2003 - The Old Man of the Mountain, a rock formation in New Hampshire, USA, crumbles after heavy rain.
  • 2005 - At least 32 people are killed and nine others injured when three two-story buildings in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore collapse after gas cylinders stored in one of them explode.

  • 2007 - Local government elections in Scotland and most of England. The Scottish National Party becomes the largest party in Scotland for the first time in their history.
  • 2007 - The Royal Canadian Mint produces the first 100-kilogram gold coin with $1,000,000 face value, 53 cm in diameter, to celebrate the new $200 Maple Leaf gold coin with the world's highest purity, 0.99999 fine. Value of the gold in the coin is about US$2.6 million.
  • 2007 - Death of Wally Schirra, American astronaut (born 1923).
  • 2008 - Tropical cyclone Nargis passes through western Myanmar killing over 140,000 people and destroying thousands of homes. Winds reached 120 mph and tidal waves reached 12 feet high. 2-3 million residents are left homeless. This is the country's deadliest natural disaster ever in recorded history.
  • 2008 - At Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, USA, the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby is held. Race favorite Big Brown wins by nearly five lengths. Second place finisher Eight Belles broke both front ankles, and was immediately euthanized. Race attendance was 157,770, the second-largest in history of the race.

  • 2009 - In Marrakech, Morocco, round 3 of the FIA World Touring Car Championship is held. Race 1 is won by Rob Huff; race 2 is won by Nicola Larini.
  • 2009 - In Jerez, Spain, round 3 of the FIM MotoGP Championship is won by Valentino Rossi.
  • 2010 - UAL Corporation (parent of United Airlines) announces it will acquire Continental Airlines for US$3.17 billion in stock, to form the world's largest carrier.
  • 2013 - Buena Vista releases the film Iron Man 3 to theaters.
  • 2018 - The lower Puna eruption causes destruction of structures and forces many citizens of Hawaii to evacuate as lava floods the land.
  • 2018 - The separatist group ETA officially announces its final dissolution after 40 years of conflict and more than 800 deaths in Spain.
  • 2019 - (to May 6) The Gaza-Israel conflict escalates after the Israeli military launches airstrikes into Gaza killing more than 20 Palestinians, following the injury of two soldiers from Gazan sniper fire.
  • 2019 - The number of deaths from the Kivu Ebola outbreak exceeds 1,000. It is the second deadliest Ebola outbreak in history.
  • 2020 - Venezuelan dissidents and an American-based private military company, Silvercorp USA, unsuccessfully attempt to infiltrate Venezuela and forcibly remove President Nicolás Maduro from office.
  • 2021 - An overpass of Mexico City's subway collapses, killing 26.
