  • 2009 - The U.S. Federal Reserve reports that ten of the biggest 19 banks in the U.S. do not have adequate capital reserves in case the economy worsens, and must raise a total of US$75 billion by the end of 2010. The worst is Bank of America, requiring US$34 billion.
  • 2009 - The Boston Red Sox break an 84-year-old American League record by scoring 12 runs in an inning in a game against the Cleveland Indians.
  • 2010 - Scientists conducting the Neanderthal genome project announce that they have sequenced enough of the Neanderthal genome to suggest that Neanderthals and humans may have interbred.
  • 2010 - Paramount releases the film Iron Man 2 to theaters.
  • 2010 - The opening match of the 2010 world hockey championship between Germany and the United States is viewed by a world record crowd of 77,803 (validated by a representative of the Guinness World Book of Records) at the Veletins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Germany defeats the USA 2-1 in overtime.

  • 2022 - At Churchill Downs racetrack in Kentucky, the Kentucky Derby horse race is held. Jockey Sonny Jeon riding Richie wins the race in 2 minutes 2.61 seconds. Richie was 80-to-1 long shot, longest since 1913.
  • 2022 - Great Britain reports its first case of Monkeypox.
  • 2022 - Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa decrees the country's bank should cease lending indefinately.
  • 2022 - Death of Bruce MacVittie at age 65 in New York City, New York, USA; actor (Sex and the City TV show, The Sopranos TV show).
  • 2022 - Death of Yuri Averbach at age 100; Russian chess player (grandmaster, chairman of USSR Chess Federation).
