  • 1974 - Massive explosion and fire in caprolactam plant at Flixborough, England, kills 28, injures 36 onsite, and 53 outside the works perimeter. The explosion damages 1821 houses, 167 shops and factories.
  • 1974 - Brenda Ball disappears from Burien, Washington (Ted Bundy victim).
  • 1975 - California Angels' Nolan Ryan fourth no-hitter beats Baltimore Orioles, 1-0.
  • 1978 - The 1978 FIFA World Cup starts in Argentina.
  • 1979 - Intel introduces the 4.77 MHz 8088 microprocessor. It was created as a stepping stone to the 8086, as it operates on 16 bits internally, but supports an 8-bit data bus, to use existing 8-bit device-controlling chips. It contains 29,000 transistors, using 3-micron technology, and can directly address 1 MB of memory. Speed is 0.33 MIPS.

  • 1980 - CNN (Cable News Network) debuts, as the world's first 24-hour television news network, from its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
  • 1981 - Death of Carl Vinson, U.S. Congressman (born 1883).
  • 1981 - Production of Chevrolet Corvette cars begins at a new plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky, USA. The first Corvette is a two-tone Beige over Dark Brown 1981 model.
  • 1983 - The CBS TV network airs the last episode of Zorro and Son. Only five episodes were aired.
  • 1984 - Birth of Taylor Handley; actor (Hidden Palms, The O.C.).
  • 1984 - Weightlifter Alexander Gunyashev of USSR snatches a record 211kg.
  • 1984 - Paramount releases the film Star Trek II: The Search for Spock to theaters.

  • 1987 - Rashid Karami Lebanon, ten-time Prime Minister of Lebanon, dies at age 65.
  • 1989 - Typhoon Lagoon water park opens at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, covering 56 acres.
  • 1989 - The SkyDome is opened in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
  • 1990 - Dow Jones Industrial Average hits a record high of 2,900.97.
  • 1990 - The Cowboy Channel on cable TV begins transmitting.
  • 1990 - U.S. President George H. W. Bush and Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev sign a treaty to end chemical weapon production and begin destroying their respective stocks.
  • 1990 - Members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army shoot and kill Major Michael Dillon-Lee and Private William Robert Davies of the British Army. Dillon-Lee is killed outside his home in Dortmund, Germany and Davies is killed at a railway station in Lichfield, England.
  • 1990 - Sony releases the film Total Recall to theaters.
  • 1990 - Death of Clyde McCoy at age 86; trumpeter/bandleader ("Sugar Blues").
  • 1991 - At the Consumer Electronics Show, Nintendo announces the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Super NES). The 16-bit system will use new game cartridges, and compact discs using a CD-ROM drive developed with Philips N.V.
  • 1991 - Death of David Ruffin at age 50 of a cocaine overdose in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; lead singer (Temptations - "My Girl", "Ain't Too Proud To Beg").
  • 1992 - Terrorist Carlos (the Jackal) is sentenced to life imprisonment.

  • 2001 - Crown Prince Dipendra of Nepal kills his father (King Birendra), his mother (Queen Aiswarya), and other members of the royal family with an assault rifle and then shoots himself, dying June 4.
  • 2001 - A Hamas suicide bomber kills 21, mostly teenagers, in the Dolphinarium disco in Tel Aviv, Israel.
  • 2002 - The Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Sacramento Kings 112-106, to win Game 7 of the National Basketball Association's 2002 Western Conference Finals.
  • 2003 - The Group of Eight (G8) summit opens in Évian-les-Bains, France, to tight security and tens of thousands of protesters.
  • 2003 - The People's Republic of China begins filling the lake behind the massive Three Gorges Dam, raising the water level near the dam over 100 metres.
  • 2003 - In China, a farmer in Sichuan Province discovers a hoard of thousands of ancient coins, stacked 2 metres high, and 1.5 metres diameter, weighing at least 7 tons. The coins mostly date to the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279 C.E.).
  • 2005 - A Dutch referendum on the draft European Union constitution votes 61 percent to 39 to reject it.
  • 2007 - U.S. warships bombard a Somali village where Islamic militants had set up a base.
  • 2007 - A 2100-year-old melon is discovered by archaeologists in western Japan.
  • 2008 - Elections in Macedonia: ruling Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski's coalition wins a majority.
  • 2008 - Death of Yves Saint Laurent, French fashion designer, after a long illness, in Paris at age 71.
  • 2008 - A large fire ravages a theme park at Universal Studios in Los Angeles, California, destroying a King Kong attraction and a set from the film Back to the Future. Over 300 firefighters fought the blaze.
  • 2008 - At the Universal Studios lot in Los Angeles, California, the 17th annual MTV Movie Awards are announced. Some winners:

  • 2009 - Air France Airbus A330-300 flight AF447 from Rio, Brazil, to Paris, France, crashes in the Atlantic Ocean, 650km off Brazil's coast. All 228 people on board are killed, the worst loss of life in Air France's history.
  • 2009 - American car-maker General Motors files for bankruptcy, the third-largest in U.S. history and the largest ever in U.S. manufacturing. The U.S. government will provide US$30 billion of additional taxpayer funds to restructure.
  • 2009 - New USA requirement goes into effect for passports or other approved identification to be shown at all entry points.
  • 2010 - Ira and Larry GoldBerg Auctioneers sell a Roman gold aureus of Marcus Junius Brutus, circa 42 BCE, graded Choice AU by NGC, finest of eight known, for US$603,750.
  • 2015 - The Oriental Star ferry on the Yangzi river in the People's Republic of China capsizes in a tornado. An estimated 400 people die.
  • 2016 - The Gotthard Base Tunnel, the world's longest and deepest railway tunnel, is opened following two decades of construction work.
  • 2017 - The U.S. announces its decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement in due time.
