  • 1522 - Death of Johannes Reuchlin in Bad Liebenzell, Germany. Reuchlin was a scholar of ancient Greek and Latin, and Hebrew language and literature.

  • 1942 - Birth of Sandra Morgan; American 4 X 100m freestyle swimmer (Olympic-gold-1956).
  • 1944 - (0000-0100 hours) Pathfinders of the United States 101st Airborne Division begin parachute landing in Normandy to set up the Drop Zones for the following main force.
  • 1944 - (about 0230 hours) 822 C-47 Dakota aircraft drop the 82nd and 101st Airborne divisions on Normandy, France.
  • 1944 - (about 0630 hours) 300 men of E Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry, 4th Division, US 1st Army, land at Utah Beach, the first company of the Allies to land. They land a mile south of their target, and encounter little opposition. Twenty-eight of 32 Dual-Drive tanks reach the beach.
  • 1944 - (about 0630 hours) The first tanks come ashore at Omaha beach, between Pointe de la Percée and Port-en-Bessin.
  • 1944 - (0720 hours) The British 2nd Army under Lieutenant-General Sir Miles Dempsey begins landing on the beaches "Gold", "Juno", and "Sword", toward the River Orne.
  • 1944 - (1500 hours) A group of British men of the 50th Division cross highway N-13, running from Caen to Cherbourg. This is the furthest penetration of any Allied unit during D-Day.
  • 1944 - Alaska Airlines commences operations.
  • 1944 - Theodore Roosevelt Junior receives congressional Medal of Honor.
  • 1944 - Over 90 km of Normandy coastline during the day, about 155,000 Allied troops land, incurring 11,000 casualties (2500 dead). 69,000 British soldiers land, with about 2,000 casualties. 14,000 Canadians land, with about 1,000 casualties, of which 350 are dead. American casualties total about 3,200.
  • 1946 - Birth of Chelsea Brown in Chicago, Illinois, USA; comedienne (Laugh-in, Matt Lincoln).
  • 1946 - Henry Morgan is first to take off shirt on TV.
  • 1946 - The 11 Basketball of America Association teams meet to schedule first season.

  • 1956 - Birth of Marilyn Jones in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA; actress (Carey - King's Crossing).
  • 1956 - Margaret Wycherly, actress (Claudia), dies at age 75.
  • 1957 - The decision of the Automobile Manufacturers Association (in the USA) to ban race involvement is announced. The ban on racing involvement includes not helping others, not supply pace cars, not publicize any results, not advertise any features of passenger cars that suggest speed.
  • 1959 - Birth of Amanda Pays; actress (Max Headroom, Off Limits).
  • 1960 - Birth of Gary Graham; actor (Money on the Side).
  • 1960 - Roy Orbison releases "Only the Lonely".
  • 1961 - Birth of Sydney Walsh; actress (Mo - Hooperman).
  • 1961 - Birth of Terri Nunn in California, USA; singer (Berlin - "Take my Breathe Away").
  • 1962 - Guinn Williams, actor (Big Boy - Circus Boy), dies at age 63.

Sirham Bishara Sirham is called the lone gunman, but three shots from behind Kennedy at upward angle, fatal shot behind right ear at point blank range. Sirhan was in front. 14 bullets fired.
  • 1971 - Air West flight 706 collides with Navy Phantom jet over Los Angeles, 50 die.
  • 1971 - Soyuz 11 takes three cosmonauts to Salyut 1 space station.
  • 1971 - CBS TV airs The Ed Sullivan Show for the last time, after a run of 23 years.
  • 1972 - Explosion at world's largest coal mine kills 427 (Wankie, Rhodesia).

  • 1982 - 30,000 Israeli troops invade Lebanon to drive out Palestinian Liberation Organization.
  • 1982 - The United Nations Security Council votes to demand that Israel withdraw its troops from Lebanon.
  • 1982 - Death of Kenneth Rexroth, American poet (born 1905).

  • 1999 - In Brazil, 345 prisoners escape from Putim prison through the front gate.
  • 1999 - Death of Anne Haddy, Australian actress (Helen Daniels - Neighbours) (born 1930).
  • 2002 - An asteroid or comet estimated at 5-10 metres in diameter explodes over the Mediterranean Sea between Greece and Libya with an estimated force slightly more powerful than the Nagasaki atomic bomb.
  • 2004 - At the 58th Annual Tony Awards, Avenue Q upsets front-runner Wicked to win the award for Best Musical.
  • 2005 - Syrian Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam resigns.

  • 2009 - Costa Cruises enters the Guinness World Records for the joint christening in Genoa of its 13th and 14th additions to the fleet - the Costa Luminosa (92,600 gross tons, 2260 passengers) and the Costa Pacifica (114,500 gross tons, 3008 passengers) cruise ships.
  • 2009 - Death of Jean Dausset, French immunologist and Nobel Prize laureate (born 1916).
  • 2010 - Rafael Nadal win the French Open of tennis for the fifth time defeating Robin Soderling in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.
  • 2010 - The MTV Movie Awards ceremony is held in California. Some awards:
