Notable films: Stagecoach (1939), Fort Apache (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), Rio Grande (1950), The Quiet Man (1952) and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence (1962). He produced, directed and starred in The Alamo (1960) and The Green Berets (1968), an won an Oscar for playing Rooster Cogburn in True Grit.
  • 1980 - E Bowell discovers asteroid #2531 Cambridge.
  • 1981 - In Southern Iran, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake occurs. Three thousand people killed, many injured, and extensive damage in Kerman Province.

  • 1989 - Youngest (age 17) male French Open champion and first US champion since 1955, Michael Chang upsets Stefan Edberg in the finals in five sets.
  • 1991 - On the cruise yacht New Yorker, dubbed the "DOS Boat", in New York City harbor, Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer unveil MS-DOS 5.0. It adds a full-screen editor, undelete and unformat utilities, and task swapping. GW-BASIC is replaced with Qbasic, based on Microsoft's QuickBASIC.

  • 2002 - Death of Robbin Crosby, American guitarist (Ratt) (AIDS) (born 1959).
  • 2002 - Antonio Meucci is recognized as the first inventor of the telephone by the United States Congress.
  • 2003 - Death of David Brinkley at age 82; TV journalist (NBC Nightly News 1956-70, This Week with David Brinkley).

  • 2004 - Terry Nichols is spared the death penalty by an Oklahoma state court on murder charges stemming from the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. The decision comes on the third anniversary of the execution of his co-defendant, Timothy McVeigh, in Terre Haute, Indiana.

  • 2007 - Shreves sells at auction a block of 18 Great Britain 1840 1-penny stamps and a strip of six, unused, for US$1,150,000.
  • 2007 - Home Box Office airs the final episode of TV show The Sopranos in the US.
  • 2008 - Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper delivers in the House of Commons an unqualified apology to the assembled leaders of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people, for the poor treatment of them from 1870 to 1996. 100,000 aboriginal children were forced to attend state-funded Christian boarding schools aimed at assimilating them.
  • 2008 - The Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope is launched.
  • 2008 - Death of Vo Van Kiet, Vietnamese prime minister (born 1922).
  • 2009 - The World Health Organization declares the H1N1 influenza has reached the pandemic level, the first time it has called a global flu epidemic in 41 years.
  • 2010 - (to July 11) The 2010 World Cup of soccer/football is hosted in Africa for the first time, as South Africa begins the opening ceremony in Johannesburg, with 32 nations competing in 64 games.
  • 2019 - Botswana decriminalizes homosexuality.
  • 2020 - Death of Emmanuel Issoze-Ngondet, 10th Prime Minister of Gabon (born 1961).
  • 2021 - (to July 11) The UEFA Euro 2020, hosted by 11 different countries, is held, and is won by Italy after beating England on penalties.
