  • 1645 - At Naseby in Northamptonshire, King Charles' army is decisively beaten. The King escapes, leaving five years of confidential correspondence, all baggage and artillery, his infantry killed or captured.
  • 1649 - Jesuits set fire to Sainte-Marie in North America, abandoning the settlement created in 1639, due to Iroquois on the warpath against them.
  • 1736 - Birth of Charles-Augustin de Coulomb physicist (formulated Coulomb's Law).
  • 1775 - The Continental Congress adopts the New England army as the Continental Army, and votes to raise ten companies of riflemen.
  • 1777 - The American Continental Congress adopts a resolution stating that "the flag of the United States be thirteen alternate stripes red and white" and that "the Union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation."

  • 1959 - The Disneyland-Alweg Monorail System begins operation in Tomorrowland at Disneyland in California. It represents the first urban monorail system in the USA.
  • 1959 - The Matterhorn Mountain with its Matterhorn Bobsleds ride opens in Fantasyland at Disneyland in California. It is the first thrill ride at Disneyland, and the first ride to use cylindrical rails and urethane wheels. The mountain is 147 feet high, 1/100th the height of the real Matterhorn mountain, and uses 2175 steel girders. Final cost of the attraction is US$1.5 million.

  • 2000 - Italian President Carolo Ciampi pardons Mehmet Ali Agca for the attempted assassination on Pope John Paul II 19 years ago.
  • 2002 - In Karachi, Pakistan, a car bomb in front of the U.S. Consulate kills 12 Pakistanis and injures 50.
  • 2005 - Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners becomes the third fastest major league player to reach the 1000-hit mark, in his 696th game. Suzuki also holds the record in Japan for being quickest player to attain a 1,000 hits, in his first 757 games.
  • 2006 - Princess Cruises holds a ship naming ceremony in New York, hosted by Martha Stewart, for the cruise ship Crown Princess (113,000 gross tons, 3080 passengers).
  • 2007 - The San Antonio Spurs sweep the Cleveland Cavaliers to win the 2007 NBA Finals.
  • 2007 - The Green Party enters government for the first time in Ireland, with Fianna Fáil and the Progressive Democrats.
  • 2008 - At RM's Joe's Garage sale in Tustin, California, a 1960 Meskowski Bowes Seal Fast Special race car sells for US$462,000. Also, a 1923 Miller 122 Supercharged race car sells for US$2,035,000.
  • 2008 - The space shuttle Discovery returns to Earth after a 14-day mission, landing at Cape Canaveral, Florida. Among the returning is Garrett Reisman, after 95 days in space.
  • 2008 - In Iwate, northern Japan, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake occurs, killing nine, injuring over 200, and causing landslides.
  • 2008 - Expo 2008 is held in Zaragoza, Spain, with the topic of "Water and sustainable development".
  • 2009 - In Catalunya, Spain, round 6 of the FIM MotoGP Championship is won by Valentino Rossi.
  • 2009 - The Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Orlando Magic 99-86 to win their 15th NBA championship in five games. Lakers coach Phil Jackson wins his record 10th title.
  • 2009 - Three-time heavyweight boxing champion Lennox Lewis is inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Lewis retired in 2003 with a record of 41-2-1, including 32 knockouts.
  • 2009 - In Greece, round 7 of the FIA World Rally Championship is won by Mikko Hirvonen.
  • 2009 - Anna Nordqvist finishes at 15-under-par 273 to win the LPGA Championship in Havre de Grace, Maryland, USA.
  • 2009 - Death of Bob Bogle at age 75 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; co-founder and original lead guitarist of the early rock band The Ventures.
  • 2013 - Iran election of president: Hassan Rohani 50 percent, Muhammad Baqer Qalibaf 17 percent, Saeed Jalili 11 percent.
  • 2017 - A fire at Grenfell Tower in London, England kills 71 people.
  • 2018 - (to July 15) The 2018 FIFA World Cup is held in Russia and is won by France.
  • 2020 - The US Supreme Court rules 6-3 on Bostock v. Clayton County that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits firing workers on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • 2021 - Death of Enrique Bolaños, 29th President of Nicaragua (born 1928).
  • 2022 - New York's highest court rules an elephant is not legally considered a person.
