  • 1896 - Off Sanriku, Japan, a magnitude 8.5 earthquake occurs. 28,000 people are killed and 170 miles of coastline are destroyed by the resulting 25-metre (80-foot) tsunami. In Hawaii, wharves are demolished. In California, a 9.5-foot wave is observed.

  • 1982 - Riots in Argentina after Falklands/Malvinas defeat.
  • 1983 - US Supreme Court strikes down state and local restrictions on abortion.
  • 1983 - Microsoft, Spectravideo, and fourteen Japanese companies announce the MSX standard specification for a low-cost home computer. The specification includes Z80 processor, video and sound processors, 64 kB RAM, and Microsoft BASIC. The standard becomes popular primarily in Japan.
  • 1983 - The CBS TV network airs the sixth and last episode of the TV series Small and Frye.
  • 1984 - Thomas Hearns knocks out Roberto Duran.
  • 1984 - Meredith Willson, composer (Meredith Willson Show), dies at age 82.

  • 1989 - Death of Victor French at age 54 of cancer; actor (Little House on the Prairie, Highway to Heaven, Carter Country).
  • 1990 - Buena Vista releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Dick Tracy to theaters.
  • 1991 - Philippines volcano Mount Pinatubo errupts for the first time in 600 years. In Luzon, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake is felt. This is the largest of a series of earthquakes associated with the eruption. At least 137 people are killed and extensive damage is caused in Zambales Province by the eruptions.
  • 1991 - Death of Arthur Lewis, British economist, Nobel Prize laureate (born 1915).
  • 1992 - During a spelling bee at a Trenton, New Jersey elementary school, U.S. Vice President Dan Quayle erroneously corrects a student's spelling of the word potato, by indicating it should have an 'e' at the end.
  • 1992 - Ghana Airways inaugurates flights to JFK Airport (New York City).
  • 1993 - Death of John Connally, Governor of Texas (born 1917).
  • 1993 - Death by heart attack of James Hunt, former British racing driver and commentator in Formula One (born 1947).
  • 1994 - Israel and the Vatican establish full diplomatic relations.
  • 1994 - Death of Kristen Pfaff; American bassist (Hole) (born 1967).
  • 1994 - Buena Vista releases the film The Lion King to theaters.
  • 1995 - A powerful earthquake, registering a magnitude of 6.5, hits the city of Egion, Greece, resulting in 26 deaths and significant damage to many buildings. Estimate of damage at US$660 million.
  • 1996 - In Manchester, United Kingdom, a massive Irish Republican Army bomb injures over 200 people and devastates a large part of the city centre.
  • 1999 - George Morber Senior and Carolyn Frederick are murdered by Angel Maturino Resendiz in Gorham, Illinois (his 8th and 9th victims, in his 7th and final incident).
  • 1999 - IBM releases the 37.5 GB Deskstar 37GP hard drive, the world's largest personal computer hard drive. It features 5400-rpm motor, five platters, 2 MB cache buffer, ATA-4 interface. Price is US$350.
  • 1999 - In Central Mexico, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurs. 20 people killed, about 275 injured and considerable damage to thousands of buildings and several bridges.
  • 2001 - Paramount Pictures releases the live-action feature film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider to theaters in the USA. The film is based on the popular video game series. Total American theater ticket sales: US$131 million.
  • 2001 - The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Philadelphia 76ers 4-1 to win their second straight NBA Title. They also finish with the best overall record in playoff history, 15-1.
  • 2002 - Near Earth Asteroid 2002 MN misses our planet by 75,000 miles (120,000 km) about one third the distance to the moon.
  • 2003 - The San Antonio Spurs defeat the New Jersey Nets to win the 2003 NBA Finals, 4-2.
  • 2004 - The Detroit Pistons upset the heavily favored Los Angeles Lakers to win the 2004 NBA Finals, four games to one.
  • 2005 - Off the coast of Northern California, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake occurs.
  • 2005 - Warner Bros. releases the film Batman Begins to theaters.
  • 2006 - Bill Gates announces he will ease away from Microsoft duties over the next two years. Ray Ozzie is immediately shifted from chief technology officer to chief software architect.
  • 2007 - CBS TV airs the final appearance of 83-year-old Bob Barker as emcee of The Price Is Right. Barker had hosted the game show for 35 years.
  • 2007 - International Health Regulations, revamped version in wake of 2003 SARS outbreak, comes into force as binding instrument of international law.
  • 2008 - Kosovo's constitution goes into effect.
  • 2008 - In New York City, the Tony Awards are presented. Some winners:

  • 2009 - The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals orders Exxon Mobil to pay US$507.5 million in punitive damages stemming from the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill off Alaska, plus 5.9 percent interest running from the 1996 trial judgment.
  • 2010 - Prime Minister David Cameron appologizes for the Bloody Sunday killings of 13 at a civil rights demonstration in Northern Ireland on January 30, 1972, by British paratroopers.
  • 2015 - Birth of Prince Nicolas, Duke of Ångermanland.
  • 2018 - Buena Vista releases the film Incredibles 2 to theaters.
  • 2019 - Hong Kong announces it will indefinitely suspend the controversial extradition bill.
