  • 1982 - Offshore El Salvador, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurs. At least 40 people killed, many injured and thousands of people left homeless in El Salvador. Felt in Costa Rica, Honduras and Nicaragua.
  • 1982 - The body of "God's Banker", Roberto Calvi, chairman of Banco Ambrosiano, is found hanging beneath Blackfriars Bridge in London.

  • 1997 - In England, the fast-food chain McDonald's wins a partial victory in its libel trial against environmental campaigners Helen Steel and Dave Morris. The court case over seven years is the lonest trial in England's legal history, including 313 days in court, and 180 witnesses called. In the 1000-page verdict, the judge accepts that McDonald's exploits children, cruelly treats animals, management can be autocratic and unfair, and that a diet of McDonald's food contributes to heart disease. Steel and Morris are ordered to pay US$95,490 damages for other unsubstantiated claims (later reduced to US$61,300, but never collected).

  • 2001 - Death of John Heyer, Australian documentary filmmaker (born 1916).
  • 2001 - An American missile hits a soccer field in northern Iraq (Tel Afr County), killing 23 and wounding 11.
  • 2002 - Total Nonstop Action Wrestling makes its debut on Pay-Per-View (the first weekly wrestling show on PPV).
  • 2003 - Death of Peanuts Hucko at age 85; bigband clarinetist (Charlie Spivak, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Ray McKinley, Eddie Condon, Jack Teagarden, Glenn Miller Orchestra, Lawrence Welk Orchestra).
  • 2005 - Preliminary election results in the Autonomous Community of Galicia, Spain show that Manuel Fraga and the Partido Popular have lost control of the autonomous parliament.
  • 2006 - In the National Hockey League, the Carolina Hurricanes defeat the Edmonton Oilers 4 games to 3 games to win the Stanley Cup.
  • 2006 - A meteor show is observed in various places in Pennsylvania, USA.
  • 2006 - IBM announces it has built a transistor that runs at 500 GHz when cooled to near absolute zero, about 100 times faster than current chips. The transistor is built from silicon laced with germanium.
  • 2008 - Queen Elizabeth II gives royal assent to the European Union's Lisbon Treaty for the United Kingdom.
  • 2009 - Ken Roberts, American radio and TV announcer (The Secret Storm and Love of Life), founder of broadcast performers' union (AFTRA), dies at age 99.
  • 2010 - Scotland records their first southern hemisphere Rugby Union series win with a 13-9 victory over Argentina in Mar del Plata's Estadio Jose Maria Minella.
  • 2010 - Roberto Alomar, former Toronto Blue Jays second baseman, is inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. Also inducted are former Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Paul Quantrill, late Minnesota Twins' owner Calvin Griffith, and late statistician Allan Roth.
  • 2010 - Swedish Crown Princess Victoria (age 32) marries her former fitness trainer, 36-year-old commoner Daniel Westling in Stockholm Cathedral. As Crown Princess Victoria's husband, gym owner Westling assumes the title of Prince Daniel, Duke of Vastergotland.
  • 2013 - Death of Gyula Horn, Prime Minister of Hungary (1994-1998) (born 1932).
  • 2014 - King Juan Carlos I of Spain abdicates in favor of his son, who ascends the Spanish throne as King Felipe VI.
  • 2018 - Canada becomes the first major industrialised country to legalise cannabis for recreational use. The Bill which legalises cannabis is set to take effect on October 17.
  • 2018 - The United States announces it will withdraw from the United Nations Human Rights Council.
  • 2019 - Four men are charged with murdering the 298 passengers and crew of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, the airliner shot down while flying over Ukraine in July 2014.
  • 2022 - Colombia presidential runoff election won by Gustavo Petro with 50.47% over Rodolfo Hernández with 47.27%.
  • 2022 - Hong Kong's floating restaurant Jumbo Kingdom sinks in the South China Sea while being towed.
  • 2022 - FINA, the world swimming governing body, votes to bar transgenger women from women's events.
