  • 1948 - In a lab in Manchester, England, the Small Scale Experimental Machine computer, nicknamed "Baby" is created, the first to contain memory (128 bytes) which could store a program.
  • 1948 - Edward Wallerstein, president of Columbia Records, demonstrates a long-playing record developed by Peter Goldmark of CBS Laboratories. The microgroove record plays at 33-and-a-third revolutions per minute and could contain a maximum of 23 minutes of music a side.

  • 1993 - Death of Louis W. Parker at age 86; inventor of the intercarrier sound system for television sets, the modern basis for coordinating sound and picture.

  • 2002 - Death of Matt Dennis at age 88; singer/songwriter (Tommy Dorsey band - "Everything Happens to Me", "Let's Get Away from It All", "The Night We Called It a Day"), musical director for the Dick Haymes radio show.
  • 2004 - Aftr taking off from Mohave, California, the White Knight carrier plane launches SpaceShipOne rocket plane, which flies into space (62 miles high) and back. This is the first privately-funded spaceplane to achieve spaceflight.
  • 2005 - A Volna booster rocket carrying the first light sail spacecraft (a joint Russian-American project) fails 83 seconds after its launch, destroying the spacecraft.
  • 2008 - The Princess of the Stars ferry capsizes off the Philippines in heavy seas, caught in Typhoon Fengshen. Over 800 people are killed, only 38 survive.
  • 2009 - As a step toward total independence from the Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland assumes control over its law enforcement, judicial affairs, and natural resources. Greenlandic becomes the official language.
  • 2009 - Three-year-old colt "Eye of the Leopard" wins the 150th running of the Queen's Plate horse race in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
  • 2009 - Peugeot finishes first and second in the Le Mans 24-hour car race.
  • 2009 - In Silverstone, Great Britain, round 8 of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship is won by Sebastian Vettel.
  • 2009 - In Brno, Czech Republic, round 6 of the FIA World Touring Car Championship is held. Race 1 is won by Alex Zanardi; race 2 is won by Sergio Hernández.
  • 2009 - Vancouver-based actress, director and writer Lorena Gale (The X Files, Battlestar Gallactica, Smallville, MANTIS, Neon Rider and The Outer Limits) dies from cancer at age 51.
  • 2010 - Price of an ounce of gold hits record high of US$1265.
  • 2010 - At least 76 people are killed in a train derailment in the south of Congo-Brazzaville, about 60km from the city of Pointe-Noire.
  • 2017 - The Great Mosque of al-Nuri in Mosul, Iraq, is destroyed by Daesh.
