  • 1996 - Death of Andreas Papandreou, Prime Minister of Greece (born 1919).
  • 1996 - In Japan, Nintendo ships the Nintendo 64 video game system. Price is 25,000 yen. It features 64-bit 93.75 MHz MIPS R4000 Series RISC main processor, 64-bit 62.5 MHz graphics and sound coprocessor, 4.5 MB of RAM, 32-bit color at 640x480 resolution, four control ports.
  • 2000 - Bulk carrier Treasure carrying some 1.6 million litres of oil sinks off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa. The spill washes onto Robben Island, home to about 5,700 pairs of jackass penguins.
  • 2001 - Near the coast of Peru, a magnitude 8.4 earthquake occurs. At least 75 people killed, 2,687 injured, 17,510 homes destroyed and 35,549 homes damaged in the Arequipa-Camana-Tacna area. A resulting tsunami measured as high as 7 metres, reaching inland 1 kilometre.
  • 2003 - The Supreme Court of the United States upholds affirmative action in university admissions.
  • 2003 - Barry Bonds becomes the first major league baseball player to hit 500 homers and steal 500 bases in his career.

  • 2005 - The San Antonio Spurs defeat the Detroit Pistons in Game 7 of the 2005 NBA Finals. The series is the first NBA Finals in 11 years to go to a seventh game.
  • 2005 - Death of Shana Alexander at age 79 from cancer; journalist (Point-Counterpoint on 60 Minutes (1975-79)).
  • 2006 - In Miami, Florida, the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrests seven men, accusing them of planning to bomb the Sears Tower and other attacks in Miami.

  • 2009 - Longtime Johnny Carson announcer/sidekick (The Tonight Show for 30 years) Ed McMahon dies at age 86 in California; host of Star Search from 1983 to 1995, co-host of Bloopers and Practical Jokes from 1982 to 1986, and emceed game shows Missing Links, Snap Judgment, Concentration, and Whodunnit!.
  • 2010 - Following a week of rain, Alagoas and Pernambuco states in north-east Brazil see flooding that destroys entire villages, and forces over 100,000 from their homes. 1000 are missing, with at least 42 known dead.
  • 2010 - US General Stanley McChrystal is forced to resign as US commander of forces in Afghanistan, replaced by General David Petraeus.
  • 2010 - A 5.0-magnitude earthquake hits Gracefield, Quebec, Canada, damaging several buildings, including the church and town hall.   • 2020 - The People's Republic of China launches the last piece of their satellite-navigation system, from Sichuan province.
  • 2020 - Malawi presidential election won by Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi Congress Party and alliance, with 59 percent of votes.
  • 2020 - A 7.5-magnitude earthquake strikes the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico and kills at least four people. It is felt more than 640 kilometres away in Mexico City.
  • 2021 - New Zealand wins the 2019-2021 International Cricket Council World Test Championship.
  • 2022 - The US Supreme Court rules the 2nd Amendment provision to "keep and bear arms" does not allow individual states to use any discretion when issuing concealed-carry licences.
  • 2022 - Death of Sally Greengross at age 86; charity director-general (Age Concern).
