  • 1976 - In Papua, Indonesia, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake occurs. Over 350 deaths from the quake and 5,000 to 9,000 people missing and presumed dead from subsequent landslides. Six villages destroyed.

  • 1998 - Microsoft releases the Windows 98 operting system. It features integrated Internet Explorer 4.0 Web browser, and Universal Serial Bus support. Code-name during development was Memphis. Total sales on the first day are 271,000 units.
  • 1999 - The San Antonio Spurs defeat the New York Knicks 78-77 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals to take home the title in a strike-shortened season.
  • 2003 - Death of Lester Maddox, Governor of Georgia (born 1915).
  • 2004 - Eric Clapton raises about $7.5 million for a drug addiction center he set up in the Caribbean. Some highlights of the sale:
    • the "Blackie" Fender Stratocaster guitar that Clapton played from 1970-1985 sells for $1 million (record price for a guitar),
    • a 1964 cherry-red Gibson guitar sells for $847,000 (record price for a Gibson guitar),
    • a 1939 Martin accoustic guitar that Clapton played on his "Unplugged" album sells for $800,000 (record price for a Martin guitar).

  • 2006 - Warren Buffett donates over US$30 billion to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
  • 2007 - Intense heatwaves begin to hit Southeast Europe as temperatures reach 46 celcius in Bulgaria and Greece.
  • 2007 - In England, following the wettest June on record, Sheffield and South Yorkshire are affected by flooding. Much of Sheffield, Doncaster and Rotherham is flooded when the River Don breaches its banks.
  • 2007 - WWE wrestler Chris Benoit, his wife Nancy Benoit, and son Daniel, are found dead as the result of a murder-suicide that took place over the previous weekend.
  • 2008 - At Christie's auction house in New York, an unused life jacket from the Titanic ship sells for US$68,500.
  • 2008 - Queen Elizabeth II strips Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe of his honorary knighthood. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown announces that Britain no longer recognizes Mugabe as Zimbabwe's legitimate leader.
  • 2008 - In London, England, a Claude Monet painting, Le Bassin Aux Nympheas, sells at Christie's auction for £40.9 million (US$80.5 million), a record for any Claude Monet work.
  • 2009 - Death of Michael Jackson at age 50 of heart failure at his home in Beverly Hills, California, USA; music superstar ("Beat It", "Billie Jean"; "Thriller" is the world's best-selling record of all time with sales of over 50 million, dubbed the "King of Pop", won 13 Grammy Awards, had 13 number one singles).
  • 2009 - Death of Farrah Fawcett at age 62 of anal cancer in Santa Monica, California, USA; actress (Charlies' Angels TV show).
  • 2010 - Edwin Jackson throws 149 pitches in a no-hitter, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 1-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
  • 2010 - A Canadian $1 million 100-kg (3215 ounces) gold Maple Leaf coin, the world's largest gold coin, sells at auction in Austria for 3.27 million euros (US$4.03 million).
  • 2010 - At the G8 summit in Huntsville, Ontario, Canada, G8 leaders pledge to spend $5 billion over the next five years on maternal and child health programs in developing countries, with Canada promising $1.1 billion for the global initiative.
  • 2017 - Death of José Manuel Mourinho Félix, Portuguese footballer and manager (born 1938).
  • 2023 - Presidential election in Guatemala: Sandra Torres 16%, Bernardo Arévalo 12%. Runoff election to be held in August.
  • 2023 - General election in Greece. New Democracy takes 40.6% of the vote to win a second four-year term.
