  • 2001 - Hannelore Kohl, the wife of the former chancellor, Helmut Kohl commits suicide. She suffered from a rare, incurable and increasingly painful allergy to light. She had not been able to leave a completely darkened room in their home for 15 months prior to her death.
  • 2002 - Death of Ted Williams, American baseball player, of cardiac arrest at age 83 (born 1918).
  • 2003 - SARS is declared to be contained by the World Health Organization.
  • 2003 - A double suicide bombing at a Moscow rock concert kills the female attackers and 15 other people.
  • 2004 - Death of Hugh Shearer, Prime Minister of Jamaica (born 1923).
  • 2004 - Pitcher Eric Gagne of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim sets a new record streak of 84 consecutive saves, as he gives up a win on his 85th game.
  • 2005 - Boston Red Sox left fielder Manny Ramirez hits his 20th career grand slam, the second-most in major league history.
  • 2006 - North Korea test fires missiles, timed with the liftoff of Space Shuttle Discovery, preceding the fireworks celebrations that night in America. The long range Taepodong-2 reportedly fails shortly after takeoff.
  • 2008 - Venus Williams beats her sister Serena 7-5 6-4, capturing her fifth Wimbledon tennis title.
  • 2008 - Daniel Nestor of Canada and teammate Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia win the Wimbeldon doubles tennis match, defeating Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden and Kevin Ullyett of Zimbabwe 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3.
  • 2008 - Holland America Line's Eurodam cruise ship begins its 10-day round-trip maiden sailing from Copenhagen, Denmark.
