  • 260 - Saint Dionysius begins his reign as Catholic Pope.
  • 1209 - Town of Béziers, centre of Cathar belief, is decimated in crusade ordered by Pope Innocent III, carried out by Cistercian abbot Arnaud Amaury and his men. He is said to have said "Kill them all - the Lord will know his own." when asked how to tell heretic Cathars from pious Catholic. The town has the Church of Mary Magdelene, and July 22 is the feast day of Mary Magdelene in the Catholic Church. Amaury later writes Pope that 20,000 were killed. This is part of the 40-year Albigensian Crusade.
  • 1298 - English defeat Scots at Battle of Falkirk.
  • 1461 - Charles VII king of France (1422-61), dies at age 58.
  • 1478 - Birth of Philip I (the Handsome) first Habsburg king of Spain (1506).
  • 1587 - Second English colony established on Roanoke Island off North Carolina.
  • 1686 - City of Albany, New York chartered.
  • 1775 - George Washington takes command of the troops.
  • 1796 - Cleveland, Ohio, founded by General Moses Cleaveland.
  • 1798 - French Emperor Napoleon and army of 40,000 defeat Mamelukes defending Cairo, Egyptm in the Battle of the Pyramids. The French lose several hundred neb, the Mamelukes lose several thousand.
  • 1812 - Duke of Wellington defeats French at Battle of Salamanca, Spain.
  • 1822 - Birth of Gregor Mendel; monk/geneticist, discoverer of the laws of heredity.
  • 1826 - Giuseppe Piazzi, discoverer of first asteroid, dies.

  • 2003 - Uday and Qusay Hussein, sons of Saddam Hussein, are killed by the U.S. military in Iraq, after being tipped off by an informant.
  • 2004 - The Old Bridge of Mostar in Bosnia-Herzegovina is reconstructed and reopened after being destroyed by Bosnian Croat forces on November 9, 1993.
  • 2004 - Production of the 2004 model Corvette ends, also ending production of the C5 model Corvette. Nearly 250,000 were built since the 1997 model.
  • 2005 - A Brazilian electrician, Jean Charles de Menezes, is shot dead at a London underground station by police who allegedly mistake him for a suicide bomber.
  • 2006 - Canada defeats USA 15-11 in the 2006 World Lacrosse Championship. This marks only the second time the USA had not won the gold medal, and only the second time Canada had won the gold. Geoff Snider is announced as Most Valuable Player.

  • 2007 - Floods cause chaos through wide areas of Britain, especially the counties of Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Oxfordshire, leaving hundreds homeless and thousands of vehicles stranded on major roads.
  • 2007 - Parliamentary elections take place in Turkey. Recep Tayyip Erdogan of the Justice and Development Party is elected Prime Minister with almost 47 percent of votes.
  • 2007 - Death of Mohammed Zahir Shah, last King of Afghanistan (ruled 1933-1973) at age 92 (born 1914).
  • 2008 - The United Progressive Alliance-led government in India survives a crucial no-confidence vote, based on disagreements between the Indian National Congress and Left Front, over the Indo-US nuclear deal.
  • 2008 - Estelle Getty, actor (Sophia - The Golden Girls, Golden Palace, Nurses, Blossom, and Empty Nest, films Tootsie, Mask, Copacabana, Stop, Or My Mom Will Shoot, Stuart Little, Emmy (1988) and Golden Globe (1986) Awards) dies at age 84 in California (born 1923).
  • 2009 - The longest (6.5 minutes) total solar eclipse of the 21st century sweeps across a narrow (250km wide) swathe from India through to China.

  • 2020 - The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 passes 15 million worldwide.
  • 2021 - Death of Boris Chochiev, Acting Prime Minister of South Ossetia (born 1957).
