  • 654 - Saint Eugene I begins his reign as Catholic Pope.
  • 1628 - In Stockholm harbor (Sweden), the Royal warship Vasa makes its maiden voyage. The 1400-ton armed galleon carries 64 bronze cannon on two decks, and has three masts with 13,000 m2 of canvas sails. Off the island of Beckholmen, a crosswind pushes the ship to one side, allowing water to pour in the open gunports. The ship is unable to right itself, and it soon sinks in 110 feet of water. About 50 die. The ship cost about 100,000 riksdaler to build.
  • 1653 - Death of Dutch Admiral Maarten Tromp at Battle of Scheveningen, by English marksman.
  • 1680 - In N Mex, Popé leads rebellion of Pueblo Indians against Spaniads.
  • 1743 - Earliest recorded prize fighting rules formulated.

  • 1993 - On South Island, New Zealand, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurs. The shock was also felt at Sydney, Australia.
  • 1994 - The 1994 Bambino World Series takes place in Henderson, Kentucky for the first time. Two years work of volunteers and funds led up to this event. It is played at Henderson's Park field with over 5,000 people in attendance.
  • 1999 - Buford O. Furrow, Junior wounds five and kills one in the Los Angeles, California, Jewish Community Center.
  • 1999 - An intruding Pakistan Navy plane is shot down in India. The incident sparks tensions between the two nations, coming just a month after the end of the Kargil War.

  • 2003 - The United Kingdom reaches a record-high temperature, the first time breaking 38.5 degrees C (101.3 degrees Fahrenheit), at Brogdale near Faversham in Kent.
  • 2005 - 103-year old Ted Radcliffe, probably the oldest professional baseball player, dies from cancer; Radcliffe was the 1943 Negro American League Most Valuable Player.
  • 2005 - Lee Seung Seop dies from exhaustion in South Korea after playing the computer game StarCraft continuously for 49 hours.
  • 2006 - London Metropolitan Police make 21 arrests in connection to an apparent terrorist plot that involved aircraft traveling from the United Kingdom to the United States. Liquids and gels are banned from checked and carry-on baggage.
  • 2007 - The European Central Bank injects about US$130 billion into money markets.
  • 2007 - The US Federal Reserve announces it would lend banks as much cash as necessary to keep money markets operating smoothly.
  • 2007 - Death of Tony Wilson, English broadcaster, nightclub manager, and record label owner (born 1950).
  • 2007 - Death of James Faust, an Apostle in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (born 1920).
  • 2008 - At the Beijing Olympics, American swimmer Michael Phelps wins the 400-metre individual medley in a world-record 4:03.84. Stephanie Rice of Australia wins the women's 400-metre individual medley in a world record time of 4:29.45.
  • 2008 - American singer-songwriter Isaac Hayes (Hot Buttered Soul album, theme from Shaft, voice of Chef from South Park) dies at his home in Memphis, Tennessee, at age 65.
  • 2008 - Ireland's Padraig Harrington wins the PGA Championship at Michigan's Oakland Hills, shooting a 277 total.
  • 2010 - The World Health Organization declares the H1N1 influenza pandemic over, saying worldwide flu activity has returned to typical seasonal patterns.
  • 2010 - At the end of the H1N1 swine flu pandemic, 60 million Americans caught it, 273,000 were hospitalized, and 12,400 died.
  • 2010 - A 1957 DeHavilland DHC-3T float plane crashes near a remote fishing village in Alaska, killing former U.S. Republican senator Ted Stevens at age 86 and four others.
  • 2018 - (to August 20) Heavy rainfall causes severe floods in the Indian state of Kerala. It is the worst flood to hit the state in a century.
  • 2019 - A fuel tanker truck explodes in Morogoro, Tanzania, killing at least 89 people and injuring dozens more.
  • 2019 - 32 are killed and 1,000,000 evacuated as Typhoon Lekima makes landfall in Zhejiang, China.
  • 2019 - (to August 25) A number of forest fires break out in the Canary Islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarote. The fires on the island of Gran Canaria are the most severe, resulting in the loss of large areas of the island's forests and leading to the evacuation of thousands of residents from a number of towns and villages.
  • 2020 - The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 passes 20 million worldwide.
  • 2020 - Prime Minister Hassan Diab of Lebanon resigns.
  • 2022 - Death of John Eastman at age 83 of pancreatic cancer in East Hampton, New York, USA; entertainment lawyer (Paul McCartney).
