  • 1634 - The Battle of Nördlingen is fought. The Imperial armies number 33,000 troops, the Protestant forces with 25,000. At the end of the day, 12,000 Protestants are dead, another 4,000 captured, including Swedish army leader Gustaf Horn.
  • 1635 - Lope Felix de Vega dramatist/poet (Angelica, Arcadia), dies at age 72.
  • 1641 - Spanish galleon Mestra Señora de la pura y Limpia Concepción arrives in Havana from Vera Cruz, to be readied for sailing with treasure fleet for Spain.
  • 1665 - "Ye Bare and Ye Cubb" is first play performed in N America (Acomac, Virginia).
  • 1667 - Earliest recorded hurricane in USA (Jamestown, Virginia).

  • 1965 - Birth of Mike Johnson; bassist (Dinosaur Jr.).
  • 1966 - Francis Chichester begins the first solo sail around the world.
  • 1966 - Race riot in Waukegan, Illinois, USA.
  • 1967 - Death of Brian Epstein, found dead in his London home from an overdose of sleeping pills; Beatles' manager.
  • 1969 - Birth of Chandra Wilson; actress (Grey's Anatomy).
  • 1970 - Birth of Tony Kanal; bassist (No Doubt).
  • 1971 - Death of Bennett Cerf at age 73; head of publisher Random House, panellist on What's My Line TV game show.
  • 1974 - New York Mets' Benny Ayala hits a home run in his first at bat.
  • 1974 - Death of Otto Strasser in Munich. Strasser had been an early member of the Nazi party, but also left the party early and when his brother, Gregor, was murdered he fled to Canada. He returned to Germany in 1955.
  • 1975 - The CBS TV network airs the last Mannix TV show in the USA. A total of 194 episodes aired.
  • 1975 - Haile Selassie, depossed Ethiopian emperor, dies at age 83.
  • 1975 - Veronica and Colin Scargill (England) complete tandem bicycle ride a record 18,020 miles around the world.
  • 1976 - Birth of Sarah Chalke in Ottawa, Canada; actress (Scrubs, Becky - Roseanne).
  • 1977 - Steve Dunne, actor (Professional Father), dies at age 59.
  • 1977 - Toby Harrah and Bump Wills hit back-to-back inside-the-park-homers off New York Yankees' pitcher Ken Clay at Yankee Stadium, Texas Rangers won 8-2.
  • 1978 - Cincinnati Reds' Joe Morgan is first to hit 200 home runs and have 500 stolen bases.
  • 1978 - New York Yankees' Catfish Hunter's 6-2 win gives him a perfect 6-0 for the month.
  • 1979 - Birth of Aaron Paul; American actor (Breaking Bad, Big Love).
  • 1979 - Lord Mountbatten of Burma and three others are assassinated by the Provisional Irish Republican Army. He was a British admiral, statesman and an uncle of The Duke of Edinburgh.
  • 1979 - Provisional Irish Republican Army members attack a British convoy at Narrow Water, County Down, killing 18 British soldiers.
  • 1979 - Birth of Jon Siebels; guitarist (Eve 6).
  • 1980 - Death of Sam Levinson at age 68; humorist, host (Sam Levenson Show, Two for the Money TV show).
  • 1981 - Divers begin to recover a safe found aboard the cruise ship Andrea Doria.
  • 1981 - Death of Joan Edwards at age 62 of a heart attack; singer (Joan Edwards Show, Lucky Strike Hit Parade radio show).
  • 1982 - Rickey Henderson steals 119th base of season; breaks Lou Brock's mark.

  • 1984 - In Northern Sumatra, Indonesia, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake occurs. One hundred twenty-three people injured and 405 buildings damaged in the Tarutung area. Felt at Kuala Lumpur and Pinang, Malaysia.
  • 1984 - Billy Sands, actor (Phil Silvers Show, McHale's Navy), dies at age 73.
  • 1984 - US President Ronald Reagan announces the Teacher in Space project.
  • 1985 - 20th Space Shuttle Mission (51-I) - Discovery 6 - launched.
  • 1988 - Birth of Alexa Vega; American actress (Evening Shade, Ladies Man).
  • 1990 - 52 Americans arrive in Turkey from Iraq.
  • 1990 - Death of Stevie Ray Vaughan when the helicopter he was traveling in collides with a ski slope; blues guitarist. The accident also claims three members of Eric Clapton's entourage.
  • 1990 - WWF Summer Slam: Ultimate Warrior beats Rick Rude.
  • 1991 - Moldova declares independence from the Soviet Union.
  • 1991 - Transdniestria declares independence from the Soviet Union.
  • 1996 - Death of Greg Morris at age 61 of brain cancer; actor (Mission Impossible TV show, Vegas).
  • 1997 - Death of Brandon Tartikoff at age 48 of Hodgkin's Disease; NBC TV executive (Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law, Family Ties, The Cosby Show, Cheers, Miami Vice, The Golden Girls, St. Elsewhere, Night Court, Highway to Heaven, Matlock, Empty Nest).
  • 2000 - The Ostankino Tower in Moscow, Russia, catches fire; three people are killed.
  • 2001 - Intel releases the 2-GHz Pentium 4 processor.
  • 2003 - Mars makes its closest approach to Earth in over 50,000 years.
  • 2005 - Jeff Kent of the Los Angeles Dodgers becomes the first major league player to hit 300 homers as a second baseman.
  • 2006 - Comair Flight 5191, carrying 50 people, crashes shortly after take-off from Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Kentucky.
  • 2007 - United States Attorney General Alberto Gonzales announces his resignation, to be effective September 17.
  • 2007 - Acer of Taiwan announces it will buy Gateway of the USA for US$710 million.
  • 2008 - At the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado, Illinois senator Barack Obama is nominated as Democratic presidential nominee.
  • 2020 - Hurricane Laura makes landfall in Lake Charles, Louisiana with winds of 150 mph, making it the strongest hurricane to ever strike the state in terms of windspeed, tied with the 1856 Last Island Hurricane.
  • 2022 - Death of Robert LuPone at age 76 of pancreatic cancer; actor (The Sopranos TV show), co-founder (Off-Broadway MCC Theater company).
