  • 1519 - An estimated 149,000 Tlascalans attack the Spanish camp, failing to defeat them.
  • 1522 - Basque navigator Juan Sebastian de Elcano on the Vittoria arrives at the Spanish port of Sanlucar de Barrameda, becoming the first to circumnavigate the globe, having left September 20, 1519 with Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan. The cargo of 30 tons of cloves is enough to pay for the entire 97-day expedition and realize a profit despite the loss of three ships and 242 of the original 260 men.
  • 1620 - 102 passengers embark from Plymouth, England on the Mayflower ship to begin the journey to a new life in the New World.
  • 1622 - Gold ship Nuestra Senora de Atocha treasure ship hits reef and sinks near Florida Keys.
  • 1628 - Puritans land at Salem, from Mass Bay Colony, witches soon to settle.
  • 1642 - English Parliament declares the cost of the civil war would be recouped from losers as well as those who did not support Parliament.
  • 1701 - James II king of England (1685-88), dies at age 68.

  • 1989 - Amateur Atheletic Federation strips Ben Johnson of all track records.
  • 1989 - The South African general election (the last under apartheid) returns the National Party with a much-reduced majority.
  • 1989 - England holds Sweden to a 0-0 draw in Sweden, qualifying for the 1990 FIFA World Cup. The game became famous after Terry Butcher sustained a deep cut to his forehead early in the game. He received stitches but played on the entire game. By the end of the game, the front of Butcher's white shirt and shorts where almost entirely covered in blood.
  • 1991 - The Soviet Union's new ruling council recognizes independence of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.
  • 1991 - The name Saint Petersburg is restored to Russia's second-largest city, which had been renamed Leningrad in 1924.
  • 1994 - Death of Nicky Hopkins at age 50 of complications from abdominal and heart ailments, in Nashville, Tennessee, USA; keyboard player (Screamin' Lord Sutch's Savages, Cyril Davies R-and-B All-Stars), sessions player (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who).
  • 1995 - NATO air strikes continue, after repeated attempts at a solution with the Serbs fail.
  • 1995 - Cal Ripken Junior of the Baltimore Orioles breaks the all time consecutive games played record in Major League Baseball with his 2131st game.
  • 1997 - The funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales takes place at Westminster Abbey, watched by over one billion people worldwide.
  • 1997 - A Jean Michel Jarre Oxygene in Moscow concert, celebrating the city's 850th anniversary, draws 3.5 million people.
  • 1999 - Death of Allen Funt, American television personality (born 1914).
  • 2000 - The last wholly Swedish-owned arms manufacturer, Bofors, is sold to American arms manufacturer United Defense.

  • 2006 - Birth of Prince Hisahito of Akishino, son of Princess Akishino and Prince Akishino, the prince is third in line to the throne of Japan.
  • 2006 - Death of Frank Middlemass at age 87; actor (Heartbeat, Rocky Hardcastle - As Time Goes By).
  • 2007 - A bomb explodes in Batna, Algeria as a crowd gathered to see Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Nineteen people die, while 107 are wounded by the attack.
  • 2007 - Death of Madeleine L'Engle, American author (born 1918).
  • 2008 - Asif Ali Zardari, the widower of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, is elected Pakistan's new president, with 481 of 702 votes.
  • 2008 - At least eight boulders dislodge from a cliff near Cairo, Egypt, killing at least 90 and burying an estimated 500 people.
  • 2008 - Death of Anita Page, American actress (Our Dancing Daughters, While the City Sleeps, The Broadway Melody), at age 98.
  • 2008 - Death of Antonio Innocenti, Italian cardinal (born 1915).
  • 2009 - In Oschersleben, Germany, round 9 of the FIA World Touring Car Championship is held. Race 1 is won by Andy Priaulx; race 2 is won by Augusto Farfus.

  • 2010 - New York Yankees' Alex Rodriguez reaches 100 RBIs for a record 14th season, passing Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Jimmie Fox, all tied at 13 seasons.
  • 2011 - Gold hits record high of US$1923 an ounce.
  • 2017 - (to September 10) The Caribbean and United States are struck by Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 hurricane that is the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic basin outside the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. The storm causes at least 146 deaths and $64.2 billion in damage.
  • 2018 - The Supreme Court of India decriminalises homosexuality.
  • 2019 - Chandrayaan-2, India's second lunar probe, in lunar orbit, deploys lander Vikram which crashes into the surface of the moon.
  • 2020 - Typhoon Haishen makes landfall on Japan and then South Korea as a strong category 2-equivalent typhoon.
