  • 1938 - Only time brothers hit back-to-back home runs (Lloyd and Paul Waner, Pittsburgh Pirates).
  • 1939 - Japan calls for a ceasefire in its local conflict with the Soviet Union at Nomonhan near the shared border with Mongolia. During the fighting since mid-May, Japan suffered 50,000 casualties. Both sides conclude the Soviet tanks were better in quality and quantity.
  • 1939 - Soviet Russia and Japan agree to an armistice in the war on the Manchukuo - Outer Mongolia border.
  • 1939 - The government of Paraguay formally declares neutrality.
  • 1939 - The Argentine Minister of Marine announces the entire Argentine naval fleet is ordered to patrol the coast to protect the country's neutrality.

  • 1970 - Decca awards Bing Crosby a second platinum disc for selling 300 million.
  • 1971 - The NBC TV network airs the first NBC Mystery Movie 90-minute drime drama TV movie series in the USA.
  • 1971 - NBC-TV debuts Columbo, starring Peter Falk.
  • 1973 - Star Trek-Animated premieres on TV.
  • 1973 - King Gustav VI Adolf of Sweden dies.
  • 1976 - Soyuz 22 carries two cosmonauts into Earth orbit for eight days.
  • 1976 - In Northeastern Italy, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake occurs, followed by a 5.9 earthquake six hours later. Extensive damage in the area already stricken in May, leaving an additional 20,000 people homeless. The earthquakes were also felt sharply throughout central Europe.
  • 1978 - Muhammad Ali beats WBA heavyweight champion Leon Spinks.
  • 1978 - New York Yankees beat Boston Red Sox 4-0, Guidry wins number 22, Yankees lead 2.5 games.

  • 1992 - Mihkel Mathiesen assumes presidency of the pre-WW II Republic of Estonia in exile, and appoints a new government in pursuit to avoid abolition of the government in exile.
  • 1994 - Disney Chairman Michael Eisner meets with Peter Rummell to discuss the Disney's America project. Projections of revenues and expenses show that the park would operate at a loss. Eisner decides to abandon the idea to build the historical theme park in Virginia, for financial reasons and due to negative press.
  • 1995 - The Buena Vista Television - Syndication TV series The Stephanie Miller Show debuts.
  • 1995 - United Artists releases the film Hackers to theaters in the US.
  • 1995 - The first episode of US TV show Xena: Warrior Princess airs in syndication.
  • 1998 - Telecommunications companies MCI Communications and WorldCom complete their $37 billion merger to form MCI WorldCom.
  • 1999 - For the first time in its 28-year history, most of Walt Disney World in Florida is closed for the day, due to the threat of Hurricane Floyd. Disney's Animal Kingdom re-opens at 12:00 PM for resort guests.

  • 2001 - The Queen Isabella Causeway in Texas collapses after being hit by a tugboat, killing eight.
  • 2002 - The Swedish parliamentary election leaves Prime Minister Göran Persson and the Social Democrats in power.
  • 2003 - The ELN kidnaps eight foreign tourists in the Ciudad Perdida in Colombia; they demand a human rights investigation and release the last hostages three months later.
  • 2003 - Barry Bonds walks for the 2,063rd time in his career, passing Babe Ruth on the all-time walks list to become number two on the list.
  • 2004 - Death of Johnny Ramone, American guitarist (The Ramones) (cancer) (born 1948).
  • 2004 - Davíð Oddsson, Prime Minister of Iceland, steps down after serving as prime minister since April 30, 1991. Oddsson trades posts with his foreign minister Halldór Ásgrímsson, who then becomes Prime Minister.
  • 2004 - Security at the Palace of Westminster in London England is compromised, when the House of Commons is stormed by a small group of protestors during a debate about fox hunting.
  • 2006 - Spinach contaminated with E. coli kills one person and poisons over 100 others in 20 states of the United States.
  • 2007 - Over 3000 Taiwanese Americans and their supporters rally in front of United Nations in New York City to demonstrate the dedication that UN should accept Taiwan. At the same time, over 300,000 Taiwanese people rally in Taiwan to make the same plea.
  • 2007 - A stony meteorite estimated with 1m diameter travelling at 24,000 km/h plows into a dry riverbed near Lake Titicaca in Carancas in the Puno region of Peru.
  • 2008 - 158-year-old American investment bank Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc files for bankruptcy protection, becoming the largest U.S. bankruptcy. Lehman's assets total about US$639 billion, leveraged by only US$30 billion of equity.
  • 2008 - American investment bank Merrill Lynch & Company agrees to sell itself to Bank of America Corp, for US$50 billion. Stock in Bank of America drops 21.3 percent, reducing market value by US$33 billion.
  • 2008 - Following negotiations, President Robert Mugabe and opposition leaders Morgan Tsvangirai and Arthur Mutambara sign a power-sharing deal, making Tsvangirai the new Prime Minister of Zimbabwe.
  • 2009 - Consortium Grupo Unidos por el Canal begins construction on third locks of the Panama Canal, with an estimated 1883 days to completion. The company's bid for the project was US$3.12 billion.
  • 2009 - Keith Floyd, pioneer of the modern British TV cooking show (Floyd on Fish), dies after a heart attack at the age of 65.
  • 2014 - Death of Nicholas Romanov, Prince of Russia (born 1922).
  • 2017 - Cassini-Huygens ends its 13-year mission by plunging into Saturn, becoming the first spacecraft to enter the planet's atmosphere.
  • 2017 - Death of Violet Brown, Jamaican supercentenarian (born 1900).
  • 2020 - Death of Moussa Traoré, 2nd President of Mali (born 1936).
  • 2021 - A trilateral security pact between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States is formed, to counter the influence of China. This includes enabling Australia to build its first nuclear-powered submarine fleet.
  • 2021 - Several ministers of the Argentine president Alberto Fernández's cabinet resign after the government's defeat in the primary elections.
  • 2022 - Death of Eddie Butler at age 65; Welsh rugby union player, commentator, journalist.
