  • 1972 - A letter bomb in London, England, kills Israeli diplomat Ami Shachori. 51 bombs are mailed to Israeli embassy employees worldwide, with most intercepted.
  • 1973 - Prince Carl Gustaf Folke Hubertus Bernadotte ascends the throne of Sweden as King Carl XVI Gustaf.
  • 1973 - National League refuses to allow San Diego Padres move to Washington DC.
  • 1973 - Pirate Radio Free America (off Cape May, New Jersey) goes on the air.
  • 1979 - In Italy, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake occurs, about 110 kilometres northeast of Rome. Five people killed, and extensive damage occurred in the vicinity of Norcia.

  • 1991 - Ötzi the Iceman is discovered in the Alps by a couple of German tourists.
  • 1992 - Liberian-registered oil tanker Nagasaki Spirit collides with container ship Ocean Blessing in the Malacca Straits off Indonesia, spilling about 14 million litres of crude oil.
  • 1993 - In Poland, a coalition of left parties wins 66 percent of parliament seats.
  • 1994 - American troops stage a bloodless invasion of Haiti in order to restore the legitimate elected leader, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, to power.

  • 2005 - North Korea agrees to stop building nuclear weapons in exchange for aid and cooperation.
  • 2006 - Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra of Thailand declares a state of emergency in Bangkok as members of the Royal Thai Army stage a coup d'état. The army announces the removal of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra from power.
  • 2006 - In Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the spot at Hanlan Point where Babe Ruth hit his first professional home run is commemorated with a plaque. The historic home run came on September 5, 1914.
  • 2007 - Typhoon Wipha hits Fuding, China. Authorities had evacuated over two million people prior to the storm's landfall.
  • 2007 - Death of Antoine Ghanem, Lebanese politician (born 1943).
  • 2008 - Major League Baseball's instant replay system produces its first reversal when Tampa Bay Rays' Carlos Pena had a two-run double changed to a three-run homer during the fourth inning against the Minnesota Twins. The initial umpire call was based on fan interference, which the video replay showed was not the case.
  • 2010 - The oil well in the Gulf of Mexico is finally sealed, after leaking about 4.9 million barrels of oil since April 20.
  • 2011 - With 434 dead, the United Nations launches a $357 million appeal for victims of the 2011 Sindh floods in Pakistan.
  • 2011 - Death of George Cadle Price, 1st Prime Minister of Belize (born 1919).
  • 2017 - A 7.1Mw earthquake strikes central Mexico, killing more than 350, leaving up to 6,000 injured and thousands more homeless.
  • 2017 - (to September 20) Hurricane Maria makes landfall on Dominica as a Category 5 hurricane, and Puerto Rico as a Category 4 hurricane. Maria causes at least 112 deaths and damages estimated in excess of US$91.6 billion.
  • 2017 - Death of Jake LaMotta, American boxer (born 1922).
  • 2017 - Death of Massimo Natili, Italian racing driver (born 1935).
  • 2017 - Death of John Nicholson, New Zealand racing driver (born 1941).
  • 2020 - A 1634 edition of The Two Noble Kinsmen, the last play by English playwright William Shakespeare, is discovered at the Royal Scots College's library in Salamanca, Spain. It is believed to be the oldest copy of any of his works in the country.
  • 2020 - Death of John Turner, 17th Prime Minister of Canada (born 1929).
  • 2021 - The 2021 Russian legislative election is held, with the United Russia party winning nearly 50% of the vote.
