  • 1939 - Germany and Russia conclude the Treaty of Frontier Regulation and Friendship, to regulate the partition of Poland. The agreement is signed in Leningrad by German Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop and Soviet Commissar for Foreign Affairs Vyadieslav Molotov. Russia gains control of Lithuania, in exchange for extension of the German area of Poland.

  • 1953 - At the General Motors Proving Grounds near Milford, Chevrolet officially unveils the Corvette to automotive press journalists. The Corvette features Powerglide two-speed automatic transmission, Polo White exterior paint, Sportsman Red interior, black canvas top, in-line six-cylinder engine, AM radio, and heater. The engine features overhead valves, cast-iron block, 235.5 cubic inch displacement, 150 horsepower, and three one-barrel carburetors.
  • 1953 - In New York, Roy Disney meets with ABC-TV's Leonard Goldenson, to seek financing for Disneyland Park. Goldenson eagerly agrees to participate. The final agreement includes a US$500,000 investment from ABC-Paramount, guarantee for US$4.5 million line of credit, in return for 35 percent interest in Disneyland Park, and a weekly one-hour TV program with Disney films and production for TV.
  • 1954 - Bert Lytell, actor (Henry - One Man's Family), dies at age 69.
  • 1954 - Birth of Steve Largent; wide receiver (Seattle Seahawks).
  • 1957 - Albert Ascoli, Italian who developed anti-tuberculosis vaccine, dies.

  • 1968 - Alberto Giolani of Italy roller skates record 23.133 miles in one hour.
  • 1968 - Atlanta Chiefs beat San Diego Toros 3-0 for NASL championship.
  • 1968 - The Beatles' "Hey Jude" single goes #1 and stays #1 for 9 weeks.

  • 1969 - Parliamentary elections are held in Federal Republic of Germany. The CDU/CSU gets 46.1 percent of the vote, the SPD 42.7 percent and the FDP 5.8 percent. The FDP joins the SPD in a coalition and Willy Brandt becomes the first SPD chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.

  • 1969 - Joe Kapp (Minnesota Vikings) passes for seven touchdowns vs Baltimore Colts (52-14).

Darren Yates, on a bet of 67.58 pounds, wins 550,823.54 pounds. The William Hill betting agency loses 8 million pounds; total payout on this win is 40 million pounds.
  • 1997 - The ABC TV network begins airing The Wonderful World of Disney TV show.
  • 2000 - Israeli opposition leader Ariel Sharon visits the Temple Mount, protected by a several-hundred-strong Israeli police force. Palestinian riots erupt, leading into a full-fledged armed uprising (called the Al-Aqsa Intifada by sympathizers and the Oslo War by opponents).
  • 2000 - Death of Pierre Trudeau at age 80; Prime Minister of Canada (born 1919).
  • 2003 - A power failure affects all of Italy except Sardinia, cutting service to more than 56 million people.
  • 2005 - American politician Tom DeLay is indicted on charges of criminal conspiracy by a Texas grand jury.
  • 2006 - After 40 years of development, Suvarnabhumi Airport opens in Bangkok, Thailand replacing Don Mueang International Airport as Bangkok's primary airport for commercial flights.
  • 2006 - Sony issues a global recall of bad lithium-ion batteries.
  • 2007 - Death of Wally Parks, American founder of the National Hot Rod Association (born 1913).

  • 2008 - China's Shenzhou VII space capsule returns to Earth after a successful mission orbiting the planet. The astronauts conducted experiments, and Zhia Zhigang made China's first space walk.
  • 2008 - Space X launches the Falcon 1 rocket into orbit, the first privately-developed liquid-fuel rocket into space, at a cost of under US$10 million.
  • 2008 - Ecuadorians vote 64 percent to approve new constitution.
  • 2009 - At least 157 demonstrators are killed in a clash with the Guinean military.
  • 2009 - Death of Guillermo Endara, President of Panama, 1989-1994 (born 1936).
  • 2010 - Price of an ounce of gold passes US$1300 for the first time, closing at $1306.60 an ounce in New York.
  • 2010 - Seven people are reported to have been killed and around 100 are missing after a landslide in Oaxaca, Mexico.
  • 2015 - NASA announces that liquid water has been found on Mars.
  • 2016 - Global CO2 levels exceed 400 ppm at the time of year normally associated with minimum levels. A 400 ppm level is believed to be higher than anything experienced in human history.
  • 2016 - International investigators conclude that Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down by a Buk missile that came from an area controlled by pro-Russian rebels.
  • 2018 - A magnitude 7.5 earthquake hits Sulawesi, Indonesia, causing a tsunami that kills at least 2,256 people and injures more than 10,679 others.
  • 2022 - Death of Coolio AKA Artis Leon Ivey at age 59 of a heart attack in Los Angeles, California, USA; hip-hop rapper ("Gangsta's Paradise" song (1995), Grammy award winner (Best Rap Solo Performance, 1996)), reality star (Celebrity Big Brother, Celebrity Boot Camp), author (Cookin' With Coolio).
  • 2023 - Death of Dianne Feinstein AKA Dianne Goldman at age 90 at home in Washington, D.C.; US politician (San Francisco Mayor, US Senator for California).
