  • 1989 - Death of Horace Alexander, English writer, pacifist, and ornithologist (born 1889).
  • 1990 - Death of Patrick White, Australian writer, Nobel Prize laureate (born 1912).

  • 1993 - In Southern India, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake occurs. Nearly 10,000 people killed, about 30,000 injured and extreme devastation in the Latur-Osmanabad area. Nearly all buildings destroyed in the village of Khillari. Felt in large parts of central and southern India. This earthquake is the largest known earthquake to occur in the area.
  • 1994 - Death of Andre Michael Lwoff, French microbiologist, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (born 1902).
  • 1997 - Death of Al 'Jazzbo' Collins of pancreatic cancer at age 78; radio personality (created the Purple Grotto program on WNEW New York, talk shows at KGO San Francisco).
  • 1999 - In Oaxaca, Mexico, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake occurs. At least 35 people killed, 215 injured, thousands of buildings damaged or destroyed, utilities disrupted and roads blocked by landslides.
  • 2005 - The Parliament of Catalonia passes, with 120 plus votes and 15 against, the Project of New Catalan Statute of Autonomy, proclaiming in Article 1, "Catalonia is a nation".
  • 2005 - Controversial drawings of Muhammad are printed in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten.
  • 2005 - Michael Eisner resigns from The Walt Disney Company board of directors, also his last day as CEO of the company. The value of the company during Eisner's term (1984-2005) rose from US$3 billion to US$60 billion. New company CEO is Robert Iger.

  • 2006 - West Coast Eagles win the Australian Football League Grand Final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
  • 2007 - Parliamentary re-elections occur in Ukraine after Ukrainian President Victor Yuschenko dismisses Parliament. Viktor Yanukovich's party wins most votes, with Yulia Tymoshenko's party then winning 31 percent.
  • 2007 - General elections in Ecuador: Acuerdo País party wins a majority, with leader Rafael Correa.
  • 2007 - Death of Milan Jelic, Bosnian-Serb politician (born 1956).
  • 2008 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average rebounds by 485.21 points (4.68 percent), the third largest one-day point gain.
  • 2008 - A Jodhpur temple stampede in western India kills over 224 people, and injures 400.
  • 2009 - A powerful Typhoon Ketsana sweeps through Vietnam, killing 40 people.
  • 2009 - Ex-Peruvian President (1990-2000) Alberto Fujimori is sentenced to six years in jail for corruption by a court in Lima, Peru.
  • 2009 - A 7.6 magnitude earthquake strikes Padang, Indonesia, a city of 900,000, killing over 1000, toppling buildings and trapping thousands under debris.
  • 2009 - The US budget deficit hits a record US$1.4 trillion in the year to the end of September.
  • 2011 - Death of Ralph Steinman at age 68 of pancreatic cancer (2011 Nobel Prize for medicine).
  • 2011 - The US CIA kills Islamist militant Anwar al-Awlaki in Yemen in a drone strike.
  • 2015 - Russia begins air strikes against ISIL and anti-government forces in Syria, in support of the Syrian government.
  • 2016 - Two paintings by Vincent Van Gogh with a combined value of US$100 million, "Seascape at Scheveningen" and "Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church in Nuenen", are recovered after having been stolen on December 7, 2002 from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
  • 2017 - Death of Monty Hall, Canadian-American television host (born 1921).
  • 2020 - Death of Ali Bozer, Acting Prime Minister of Turkey (born 1925).
  • 2022 - Military coup in Burkina Faso, led by army captain Ibrahim Traoré.
  • 2022 - Russia annexes the former Ukrainian territories of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson.
