  • 100th: 1924 - Birth of Arkady Vorobyev; middle heavyweight (Olympic-gold-1956, 1960).
  • 90th: 1934 - Birth of J Carter Brown in Providence, Rhode Island, USA; art director (Washington National Gallery).
  • 90th: 1934 - Bruno Hauptmann is indicted for murder of Lindbergh's son.
  • 80th: 1944 - Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet debuts on CBS radio in the USA.
  • 70th: 1954 - Birth of Michael Dudikoff; actor (Cobra, Blood Sweat and Tears).
  • 60th: 1964 - Dr Charles Hodge, NYU professor (Answers for Americans), dies at age 69.
  • 60th: 1964 - Gilroy Roberts becomes first US Mint chief coin engraver to retire (rather than die).
  • 50th: 1974 - In the Leeward Islands, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake occurs. Considerable property damage on Antigua, Barbuda, and Saint Kitts.
  • 30th: 1994 - The President of the United Nations Security Council says that Iraq must withdraw its troops from the Kuwait border and immediately cooperate with weapons inspectors.
  • 20th: 2004 - Kenneth Bigley, the British hostage held by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, an Iraqi insurgent, is killed after a failed escape attempt.
  • 20th: 2004 - Suicide bombers detonate two bombs at the Red Sea resort of Taba, Egypt, killing 34 people, mainly Israeli tourists and Egyptian workers.
  • 20th: 2004 - Martha Stewart begins serving a five-month sentence for insider trading, at the Alderson Federal Prison Camp in West Virginia.
  • 15th: 2009 - A 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurs about 300km north-northwest of Vanuatu, followed by a 7.1 earthquake an hour later.
  • 5th: 2019 - The Government of Ecuador, headed by President Lenín Moreno, moves to Guayaquil as the Carondelet Palace in Quito is overtaken by protesters.
