  • 150th: 1874 - William Marcy "Boss" Tweed, of Tammany Hall (New York City) is convicted of defrauding the city of $6 million, sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment.
  • 70th: 1954 - Birth of Kathleen Quinlan in Mill Valley, California, USA; actress (Rose Garden, Twilight Zone).
  • 40th: 1984 - A series of explosions at the PEMEX Petroleum Storage Facility at San Juan Ixhuatepec, in Mexico City, ignites a major fire and kills about 500 people.
  • 30th: 1994 - First National Lottery draw in England. Ticket sales estimated at 45 million pounds.
  • 25th: 1999 - John Carpenter becomes the first top prize winner of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and breaks the record of the largest single win (US$1 million) on a United States game show.
  • 25th: 1999 - In Istanbul, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) ends a two-day summit by calling for a political settlement in Chechnya and adopting a Charter for European Security.
  • 25th: 1999 - MGM releases the film The World Is Not Enough to theaters.
  • 25th: 1999 - Buena Vista releases the film Toy Story 2 to theaters.
  • 25th: 1999 - NBC airs the 100th episode of TV show ER.
  • 20th: 2004 - The NBA's Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons engage in a brawl that involves fans and players. The incident gets Pacer Ron Artest suspended for the whole season.
  • 20th: 2004 - Buena Vista Pictures Distribution releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film National Treasure in theaters in the USA.
  • 20th: 2004 - Death of John Robert Vane, British pharmacologist, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (born 1927).
  • 15th: 2009 - Hamid Karzai is sworn in for a second term as president of Afghanistan.
  • 15th: 2009 - European Union leaders choose Belgian Prime Minister Herman van Rompuy as first permanent European Council President, and select Baroness Catherine Ashton from the UK as High Representative.
  • 5th: 2019 - General election in Spain: Socialists 120, People's Party 89, Vox 52, Podemos 35, Ciudadanos 10, others 10.
  • 5th: 2019 - Google enters the video game market with the launch of Stadia.
