  • 15th: 2009 - Former CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite, "the most trusted man in America," dies in New York at age 92.
  • 10th: 2014 - After a five-hour humanitarian ceasefire, Israel confirms the beginning of a ground offensive in Gaza.
  • 10th: 2014 - Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, a Boeing 777, en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, crashes in eastern Ukraine after being shot down by undetermined source. All 298 people on board are killed.
  • 5th: 2019 - Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, former head of the Sinaloa Cartel, which became the biggest supplier of drugs to the U.S., is sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years.
  • 5th: 2019 - The World Health Organization declares the Kivu Ebola epidemic to be a public health emergency of international concern.
