  • 150th: 1874 - Birth of James (Tod) Sloan; jockey, created monkey crouch riding style.
  • 100th: 1924 - Birth of Martha Hyer; actress (Day of the Wolves, Night of the Grizzly).
  • 80th: 1944 - Boston Braves' Red Barrett throws only 58 pitches to beat Cincinnati Reds 2-0.
  • 80th: 1944 - At Hotel Maison Rouge in Strasbourg, Martin Bormann meets with top German business leaders and Nazi party officials to prepare for post-war commercial success, economic resurgence of Germany. Code name of the first phase of the plan is Operation Eagle Flight, involving the massive movement of money, technology, and specialists from Germany.
  • 80th: 1944 - Race riots in Athens, Alabama, USA.
  • 70th: 1954 - Sir Gordon Richards retires as a jockey with record 4,870 wins.
  • 50th: 1974 - Ilona Massey, actress/singer (Ilona Massey Show), dies at age 64.
  • 50th: 1974 - Pedro Regas, actor (Pat Paulsen's 1/2 Comedy Hour), dies at age 92.
  • 40th: 1984 - Birth of Ryan Eggold; actor (Beverly Hills 90210).
  • 40th: 1984 - Mary Decker trips on heel of Zola Budd during 3,000m Olympic run.
  • 30th: 1994 - The 1994 Bambino World Series takes place in Henderson, Kentucky for the first time. Two years work of volunteers and funds led up to this event. It is played at Henderson's Park field with over 5,000 people in attendance.
  • 25th: 1999 - Buford O. Furrow, Junior wounds five and kills one in the Los Angeles, California, Jewish Community Center.
  • 25th: 1999 - An intruding Pakistan Navy plane is shot down in India. The incident sparks tensions between the two nations, coming just a month after the end of the Kargil War.
  • 5th: 2019 - A fuel tanker truck explodes in Morogoro, Tanzania, killing at least 89 people and injuring dozens more.
  • 5th: 2019 - 32 are killed and 1,000,000 evacuated as Typhoon Lekima makes landfall in Zhejiang, China.
  • 5th: 2019 - (to August 25) A number of forest fires break out in the Canary Islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarote. The fires on the island of Gran Canaria are the most severe, resulting in the loss of large areas of the island's forests and leading to the evacuation of thousands of residents from a number of towns and villages.
