  • 80th: 1944 - Allied land forces cross into Germany.
  • 80th: 1944 - In Quebec City, Canada, Prime Minister William King hosts a nine-day meeting with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and American President Franklin Roosevelt. They discuss Germany, European military strategy, and the war against Japan.
  • 70th: 1954 - The Miss America Pageant is televised, live, for the first time, with host Bob Russell. Lee Meriwether (Miss California) is crowned Miss America by a panel of judges.
  • 70th: 1954 - Birth of Reed Birney in Alexandria, Virginia, USA; entertainer (Greatest Man in the World).
  • 60th: 1964 - Gillette's 20-year contract with Madison Square Gardens and ABC to televise fights for free ends as Dick Tiger defeats Don Fullmer at the Cleveland Auditorium.
  • 50th: 1974 - Saint Louis Cardinals beat New York Mets, 4-3, in 25 innings (7 hours 4 minutes), record 202 plate appearances, Felix Milan and John Milner come to bat 12 times each.
  • 50th: 1974 - Eastern Air Lines Flight 212 from Charleston, South Carolina to Charlotte, North Carolina crashes 3.3 miles short of the Charlotte airport, killing 72 passengers and crew.
  • 25th: 1999 - Eric Milton of the Minnesota Twins pitches a 7-0 no-hitter against the Anaheim Angels.
  • 20th: 2004 - Barry Bonds becomes the first major league baseball player to walk over 200 times in a single season.
  • 20th: 2004 - Death of Patriarch Peter VII of Alexandria (helicopter crash) (born 1949).
  • 15th: 2009 - Japan successfully launches its new space freighter, 16.5-tonne unmanned H-II Transfer Vehicle, from the Tanegashima base in the south of the country, on a mission to re-supply the International Space Station.
  • 15th: 2009 - The space shuttle Discovery lands at Edwards Air Force Base in California at the end of a two-week mission to the International Space Station.
  • 5th: 2019 - Astronomers announce the detection of water in the atmosphere of exoplanet K2-18b, the first such discovery for an exoplanet in the habitable zone around a star.
