  • 100th: 1924 - Saint Louis Cardinals' Jim Bottomley bats in 12 RBIs in one game.
  • 90th: 1934 - Birth of Elgin Baylor; NBA star (1958-59 Rookie of the Year-Los Angeles Lakers).
  • 80th: 1944 - Birth of Ard Schenk in Holland; 1500m, 5km, 10km speed skater (Olympic-gold-1972).
  • 80th: 1944 - Adolf Hitler meets with military advisors at Wolfsschanze in East Prussia. Hitler announces he will launch an offensive through the Ardennes, with objective being Antwerp, Belgium. The idea is to isolate the British, Canadian, and two American armies in the north, and force their surrender. The reduced strength of the US might then cause them to make peace, fearful of communist Soviet Union.
  • 60th: 1964 - ABC-TV premieres TV show Shindig. The first show features Sam Cooke, The Everly Brothers, and The Righteous Brothers.
  • 60th: 1964 - Birth of David Michael Sabo in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, USA; rocker (Skid Row - "Psycho Love").
  • 50th: 1974 - US President Gerald Ford announces conditional amnesty for American Vietnam War deserters.
  • 40th: 1984 - The first episode of US TV show Miami Vice debuts.
  • 30th: 1994 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film Quiz Show to theaters in the USA.
  • 20th: 2004 - Hurricane Ivan strikes Gulf Shores, Alabama, as a Category 3 storm, killing 25 in Alabama and Florida, becoming the third costliest hurricane in American history.
  • 5th: 2019 - A gas explosion in Koltsovo, Novosibirsk Oblast, Russia sets off a fire in a bioweapons plant that houses viruses including smallpox, ebola and anthrax.
  • 5th: 2019 - United Auto Workers stages a strike of workers at automobile plants in North America.
