Personal Computer history:

  • 1968 - An advertisement in Science magazine by Hewlett-Packard introduces first programmable scientific desktop calculator, which Hewlett-Packard calls "the new Hewlett-Packard 911A personal computer".
  • 1990 - The Fox Network airs the Beverly Hills 90210 TV show in the USA. The school newspaper room has several Macintosh computers.
  • 1999 - Red Hat begins shipping Red Hat Linux 6.1 operating system. Included is the Star Office 5.1a office suite. Price ranges from US$29.95 to US$140.95.
  • 1999 - Intel announces the official name for the 64-bit processor code-named Merced: Itanium.
  • 1999 - Palm Computing launches the Palm VII handheld computer with wireless support in 260 cities throughout the US. The Palm.net network costs start at US$9.99 for 80 transactions, with access to email, Internet messaging, and over 100 content providers.
  • 1999 - Palm Computing introduces the Palm Vx handheld computer. It is based on the Palm V design, expanding memory from 2 to 8 MB.
  • 2000 - Maxtor announces it will acquire Quantum's hard drive business, for about US$1 billion in stock.
  • 2001 - In San Francisco, California, and London, England, Microsoft introduces the Pocket PC 2002 operating system. Code-name during development was Merlin.
  • 2001 - Compaq Computer introduces the iPaq H3870 handheld computer. It features 206 MHz Intel StrongARM SA-1110 processor, 64 MB RAM, Bluetooth wireless communications, 65,536 color TFT screen, Secure Digital expansion slot, Pocket PC 2002 operating system. The battery provides about 12 hours of operation. Price is US$649; the unit is due by mid-November.
  • 2001 - Casio introduces the Casio Cassiopeia E-200 handheld computer. It features 64 MB RAM, CompactFlash Type II slot, Secure Digital and MultiMedia Card slot, Pocket PC 2002 operating system, USB connection, 206 MHz Intel StrongARM SA-1110 processor, 65,536-color reflective TFT display. Price is US$599; weight is 7 ounces; size is 5 x 3.1 x 0.6 inches.
  • 2001 - Toshiba America Information Systems introduces the Toshiba Pocket PC e570 handheld computer. It features 206 MHz Intel StrongARM SA-1110 processor, 64 MB RAM, CompactFlash Type II slot, SecureDigital slot, 65,536-color reflective display, and Pocket PC 2002 operating system. The battery provides about 8 hours of operation. Price is US$569; the unit is to be available in November.
  • 2004 - PalmOne releases the Tungsten T5 handheld computer in the US. It features 416 MHz Intel XScale processor, 256 MB flash memory, SecureDigital slot, 320x480 color display, Palm OS 5, Bluetooth wireless connectivity. Price is US$400.
  • 2004 - India issues a 5 rupee postage stamp depicting a computer.
  • 2006 - Comedy Central airs the South Park TV show in the USA. The episode centers around the World of Warcraft computer game. Several characters play in the game, attempting to defeat a powerful player.
  • 2009 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA.
    • An old desktop personal computer "ADDGOOD" appears, with "WORD JAMMERS" software.
    • A laptop computer is used to access the Internet.

Video Game history:

  • 1995 - Nintendo releases the Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island video game for the Super NES in the US.
  • 1997 - Gunpei Yokoi, inventor and toy maker, dies at age 56 when struck by a car on an expressway in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. Yokoi designed Nintendo's Game & Watch handheld games, Game Boy, and Game Boy Pocket.
  • 2002 - Majesco Sales releases the BloodRayne video game for the PlayStation 2 in the USA.
  • 2004 - Nintendo releases the Mario Pinball Land video game for the Game Boy Advance in the US.
  • 2004 - Midway releases the Mortal Kombat: Deception video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the US.
  • 2005 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Fairly Oddparents TV show in the US. One character asks another what to do the rest of the day. The other replies "...play video games?".
  • 2005 - Ubisoft releases the Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the US.
  • 2005 - Capcom releases the Mega Man Zero 4 video game for the Game Boy Advance in the US.
  • 2005 - Konami releases the Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow video game for the Nintendo DS in the USA.
  • 2005 - Atlus releases the Trauma Center: Under the Knife video game for the Nintendo DS in the USA.
  • 2006 - Comedy Central airs the South Park TV show in the USA. A character wears a t-shirt saying "Dwarf Needs FOOD!", a reference to the Gauntlet video games.
  • 2009 - Nintendo releases the Wii Fit Plus video game for the Nintendo Wii in the USA.
  • 2009 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA. Twins play handheld video games (like Nintendo Game Boy Advance) in opening credits.
  • 2011 - 2K Sports releases the NBA 2K12 video game for the PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, and Xbox 360 in the US.
  • 2011 - Namco Bandai releases the Dark Souls video game for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in the US.
  • 2011 - Bethesda releases the Rage video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.
