Personal Computer history:

  • 1985 - Bill Gates decides to proceed with an initial public offering of Microsoft stock.
  • 1996 - Apple Computer unveils the MessagePad 2000 computer. It features 1 MB DRAM, 5 MB Flash RAM, 2 Type II PC Card slots, backlit 480x320 100 dpi display, size 4.7 x 8.3 inches, Newton OS 2.1, 1.4 pound weight, and 161.9 MHz StrongARM 110 RISC processor. It runs on four AA batteries.
  • 1996 - Microsoft and Intel announce plans to develop the NetPC specification.
  • 2002 - Palm introduces the Palm Tungsten T handheld computer. It features voice recorder, Bluetooth wireless support, 16 MB RAM, 3-inch diagonal 320x320 pixel 65,536-color TFT display, Secure Digital slot, USB docking cradle/charger, 175 MHz Texas Instruments OMAP1510 chip (ARM 925 processor), Palm OS 5.0, rechargeable lithium ion battery. Price is US$499; weight is 5.6 ounces; size is 4 x 3 x 0.6 inches.
  • 2002 - Palm unveils the Tungsten W handheld computer. It features built-in keyboard, General Packet Radio Service network, 33 MHz Dragonball VZ processor, Palm OS 4.1.1, 320x320 screen. Price is US$549.
  • 2003 - Palm shareholders vote to merge with Handspring, with the new company to be called palmOne Worldwide, and to spin off PalmSource as a separate company.
  • 2008 - Electronic Arts releases the Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 computer game for Windows computers.
Video Game history:

  • 1981 - At the Exposition Center in Chicago, the Atari Coin-Op $50,000 World Championship is held, over five days. Participation is only 250 players, on expectations of 10-15,000. Eric Ginner wins $12,000 in Open Singles tournament playing Centipede. The check bounces, but Atari pays it to avoid bad publicity.
  • 1998 - SNK releases the NeoGeo Pocket handheld video game system in Japan. Price is about US$68.
  • 2003 - Square Enix releases the Final Fantasy XI video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2007 - Activision releases the Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock video game for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and PlayStation 2 in the USA.
  • 2008 - Bethesda Softworks releases the Fallout 3 video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.
