Personal Computer history:

  • 1982 - Access is incorporated.
  • 1983 - In New York, IBM announces the IBM PCjr. It features an Intel 8088 CPU, 64 kB RAM, detached keyboard, two cartridge slots, joystick, light pen, serial port, for US$669. Price with 5.25-inch floppy drive and 128 kB RAM is US$1269. PC-DOS 2.1 operating system is available as an option. Code-name during development was "Peanut".
  • 1984 - Toshiba announces its development of a 1-Megabit RAM chip.
  • 1994 - Mosaic Communications files a lawsuit against Spyglass and the University of Illinois, seeking a declaration of whether or not Mosaic Netscape software infringes on browser code developed at the university and licensed through Spyglass.
  • 1995 - At the ANA Hotel in San Francisco, Intel formally announces and begins shipping the Pentium Pro processor, at speeds of 150 to 200 MHz. The processor incorporates 5.5 million transistors. Bus speeds of the new Socket 8 interface are 60 MHz (150, 180 MHz processor), and 66 MHz (166, 200 MHz processor). The 150 MHz version is manufactured using a 0.5 micron BiCMOS process; the other processors employ a 0.35 micron process. Prices are US$974 (150 MHz + 256 kB cache), US$1682 (166 MHz + 512 kB cache), US$1075 (180 MHz + 256 kB cache), US$1225 (200 MHz + 256 kB cache), US$1989 (200 MHz + 512 kB cache),
  • 2002 - U.S. District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly conditionally accepts a proposed settlement between Microsoft and the U.S. Justice Department.
  • 2002 - ViewSonic releases the ViewSonic Pocket PC V35 handheld computer. It features 300 MHz Intel PXA250 XScale processor, MMC and Secure Digital slot, stylus, 240x320 pixel display. The battery powers the unit for about ten hours. Price is US$299; weight is 4.2 ounces; 4.8 x 3.0 x 0.4 inches.
  • 2002 - The WB Television Network airs the Sabrina, the Teenage Witch TV show in the US.
    • In response to a screen-saver's request to help get off a computer, a character says "Sorry, I don't do Windows".
    • Desktop and laptop computers are used, with software "Photo Tweak" to edit images.

  • 2008 - North Korea issues a 12-w postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of introductory compulsory secondary education, depicting a boy at a personal computer.
Video Game history:

  • 1982 - The Columbia Broadcasting System airs the Cagney and Lacey TV show in the USA. A short scene takes place in a video games arcade, showing Stern's Astro Invaders video game.
  • 1995 - Acclaim releases the Mortal Kombat 3 video game for the PlayStation in the UK.
  • 1995 - Sega releases the Tails Adventures video game for the Game Gear in the US.
  • 1996 - Acclaim Entertainment releases the Mortal Kombat Trilogy video game for the Nintendo 64 in the US.
  • 1996 - Nintendo releases the Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble video game for the Super NES in the US.
  • 2001 - Enix releases the Dragon Warrior VII video game for the PlayStation in the US.
  • 2002 - Microsoft and Sega release a limited edition (999 produced) Panzer Dragoon Orta Xbox system in Japan. It includes a white case, white controller, Panzer Dragoon Orta video game, and a special necklace. Price is about US$325. All units sell on the opening day.
  • 2002 - The WB Television Network airs the Sabrina, the Teenage Witch TV show in the US. A character says the best her magic spell book can do is "exorcise a demon-infested Atari", likely referring to the Atari 2600 or Atari Video Computer System.
  • 2004 - Sony begins selling a smaller version of the PlayStation 2 video game system in the United States and Europe. Model SCPH-70000CB is 2.8cm thick, includes a network adapter and DVD remote, but excludes hard drive support. Price in the United States is US$149.99.
  • 2005 - Electronic Arts releases The Sims 2 video game for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, Game Cube, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo DS in the US.
  • 2005 - Activision releases the Call of Duty 2: Big Red One video game for the Xbox, PlayStation 2, and GameCube in the US.
  • 2005 - Electronic Arts releases the James Bond 007: From Russia With Love video game for the Xbox, PlayStation 2, and GameCube in the US.
  • 2005 - Capcom releases the Without Warning video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the US.
  • 2005 - Electronic Arts releases the Battlefield 2: Modern Combat video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the US.
  • 2005 - LucasArts releases the Star Wars Battlefront II video game for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and Xbox in the USA.
  • 2006 - Activision releases the Marvel: Ultimate Alliance video game for the Xbox 360, Xbox, GameCube, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable in the USA.
  • 2006 - Electronic Arts releases the Need for Speed Carbon video game for the Xbox 360, Xbox, GameCube, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable in the USA.
  • 2006 - Nintendo releases the Pokémon Ranger video game for the Nintendo DS in the US.
  • 2007 - Nintendo releases the Super Mario Galaxy video game for the Nintendo Wii in Japan.
  • 2007 - Capcom releases the Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles video game for the Nintendo Wii in the US.
  • 2007 - Sony releases the Gran Turismo 4 Mobile video game for the PlayStation Portable in the US.
  • 2011 - Sony Computer Entertainment releases the Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception video game for the PlayStation 3 in the US.
  • 2011 - Sega releases the Sonic Generations video game for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo 3DS in the US.
