Personal Computer history:

  • 1997 - Apple Computer ships the MessagePad 2000 for $949 with lots of software, 16 grayscale screen, 160MHz StrongARM processor, audio recording capability, backlit rotating screen.
  • 1997 - Apple Computer releases the Apple eMate 300. It features 25MHz ARM 710a processor, 3 MB RAM, 480x320 pixel backlit grayscale screen, Newton 2.1 operating system. Price is US$799.
  • 2001 - Apple Computer begins selling the Mac OS X 10.0 operating system, for US$129. Code-name during development was Cheetah.
  • 2003 - Intel begins providing samples of 200-400 MHz XScale processors to handheld device makers. The processors incorporate StrataFlash memory, allowing smaller handheld computers with improved battery life.
  • 2004 - The European Competition Commission labels Microsoft an abusive monopolist. The Commission says Microsoft must offer European computer makers two versions of Windows, with and without Windows Media Player, must share technical information on server software with rivals, and must pay a US$613 million fine.
Video Game history:

  • 2003 - Nintendo releases The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker video game for the GameCube in the US.
  • 2004 - Sony releases the Hard Disk Drive for the PlayStation 2 in the US. Capacity is 40 GB, price is $99.
  • 2004 - Sony releases the Sony releases the Final Fantasy XI video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2005 - Sony releases the PlayStation Portable handheld video game system in North America. It includes a 32MB Memory Stick Duo card, battery pack, and the film Spider-Man 2 on UMD. Price is US$249.99 in the US, CDN$299.99 in Canada.
  • 2005 - Sony CEA releases the Ape Escape: On the Loose video game for the PlayStation Portable in the US.
  • 2005 - Ubisoft releases the Lumines video game for the PlayStation Portable in the USA.
  • 2005 - Konami releases the Metal Gear Acid video game for the PlayStation Portable in the US.
  • 2005 - Sony Computer Entertainment America releases the MLB video game for the PlayStation Portable in the US.
  • 2005 - Namco releases the Ridge Racer video game for the PlayStation Portable in the US.
  • 2005 - Sony Computer Entertainment America releases the Wipeout Pure video game for the PlayStation Portable in the USA.
  • 2005 - Nintendo releases the Nintendo DS video game system in two new colors, Graphite Black, and Pure White, in Japan. Price is about US$150.
  • 2009 - Square Enix releases the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS in the US.
