  • 1928 - Universal Pictures releases the 24th Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film, Tall Timber, to theaters. released.
  • 1932 - The Silly Symphony film The Bears and the Bees is released to theaters.
  • 1948 - The Pluto film Pluto's Purchase is released. Mickey Mouse and Butch also appear.
  • 1955 - The July 9 issue of Business Week magazine features Walt Disney on the cover, for an article on Disneyland.
  • 1958 - Buena Vista releases Disney's live-action feature film The Light in the Forest to theaters. The film is based on the novel by Conrad Richter.
  • 1958 - Disney releases the thirteenth People and Places film, Ama Girls, to theaters.
  • 1973 - (to August 4) The Walt Disney 50th Anniversary Film Retrospective is held at the Alice Tully Hall in New York City.
  • 1975 - Buena Vista Distribution releases the Walt Disney Productions live-action feature film One of Our Dinosaurs is Missing to theaters in the US. The film is based on the novel The Great Dinosaur Robbery by David Forrest.
  • 1976 - Buena Vista releases the live-action feature film Treasure of Matecumbe to theaters. The film is based on the novel A Journey to Matecumbe by Robert Lewis Taylor.
  • 1981 - Walt Disney Productions acquires Retlaw Enterprises for US$46.2 million in Disney stock. The deal gives Disney the rights to the Walt Disney name and Disneyland's monorail and steam railroad.
  • 1982 - Buena Vista releases the live-action and animated feature film Tron to theaters in the US. It cost US$21 million to produce. It is presented in Super Panavision 70mm. Mickey Mouse has a cameo appearance.
  • 1982 - Bally debuts the arcade game Tron.
  • 1989 - The NBC TV network airs The Magical World of Disney show, featuring Wild Jack, part two.
  • 1989 - The Disney Channel airs The Disney Channel Premiere Film Great Expectations, part one.
  • 1990 - The NBC TV network airs the show Turner & Hooch, a pilot for a series.
  • 1992 - Buena Vista International releases the film Beauty and the Beast to theaters in Argentina and Peru.
  • 1993 - The last episode of the TV series Cutters airs. Five shows were produced in total.
  • 1999 - The one hundredth sailing of the Disney Magic cruise ship is celebrated.
  • 2003 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Walt Disney Pictures live-action feature film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl to theaters in the USA. The film includes several references to Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean attraction:
    • prisoners in jail try to get a dog with a key to come to them,
    • a pirate sits on a barrel drinking from a bottle,
    • a parrot says "Dead men tell no tales", and
    • the theme song is sung "Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me".

Births on July 9

  • 1894 - Birth of Joe Fowler in Maine; graduated US Naval Academy and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, designed World War II aircraft carriers Lexington and Saratoga, retired 1948 as rear admiral, joined Disney team April 1954, oversaw construction of Disneyland, supervised operations, in charge of construction of Walt Disney World, retired 1978, named a Disney Legend 1990.

Deaths on July 9

  • 2004 - Death of Sam McKim of heart failure; child actor, 20th Century Fox, Disney Studios, film storyboard artist, Walt Disney World, retires 1987, named Disney Legend 1996.
