  • 1879 - John Brahms' Violin Concerto in D major premieres in Leipzig.
  • 1952 - Dmitri Shostakovich completes his 5th string quartet.
  • 1960 - Johnny Cash plays his first free concert for inmates, at a show at San Quentin Prison in California.
  • 1962 - Music group The Beatles fail an audition in London, England for a recording contract with Decca Records.
  • 1976 - "Musical Jubilee" closes at Saint James Theater New York City, New York after 92 performances.
  • 1979 - United Nations Secretary General Kurt Waldheim heralds the start of the International Year of the Child. Many musicians donate to the Music for UNICEF Concert fund including ABBA, who wrote the song "Chiquitita" to commemorate the event.
  • 1982 - Abba makes their final live appearance as a group in a concert in Stockholm.
  • 1985 - VH-1 premieres on US cable as an adult contemporary music video channel.
  • 1995 - Rod Stewart sets a new record for the largest attendance for an open-air concert, as 3.5 million people turn out for his New Year's concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

  • 1953 - Hank Williams, legendary country singer ("Cold Cold Heart", "Half as Much", "Jambalaya", "Your Cheatin' Heart", "Hey, Good Lookin", "I'm So Lonesome I Could Die"), dies at age 29 from a drug/alcohol-related heart attack.
  • 1953 - Ludomir Rózycki, Polish composer/conductor (Casanova), dies at age 68.
  • 1958 - David Broekman, musician ("Think Fast"), dies at age 55.
  • 1972 - Death of Maurice A Chevalier at age 83; French singer, actor (Can Can, Gigi), dies at age 83.
  • 1995 - Jess Stacy, US jazz pianist ("Great Gatsby"), dies at age 90.
