  • 1903 - First baseball World Series game, Pittsburgh Pirates versus Boston Americans at Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds in Boston.
  • 1908 - Jack Chesbro's final New York Yankees' victory, beats Walter Johnson 2-1.
  • 1919 - World Series #16 begins as a best of 9 affair, Chicago White Sox intentionally throw this series to satisfy gamblers (The Black Sox Scandal).
  • 1921 - First all New York series to be played entirely in one stadium (the Polo Grounds) and first New York Yankees World Series begins (World Series #18).
  • 1922 - Former Chicago Staleys play first NFL game as Chicago Bears, win 6-0.
  • 1932 - Babe Ruth's points and hits a home run there, off of Chicago Cubs' Charlie Root.
  • 1932 - NHL re-admits Ottawa and drops Pittsburgh.
  • 1933 - Green Bay Packers make five first downs, the New York Giants make 0, but still win 10-7.
  • 1933 - Washington Senators' coach Nick Altrock plays in a game at age 57.
  • 1944 - Saint Louis Browns win their only American League pennant.
  • 1946 - First National League playoffs, Brooklyn Dodgers versus Saint Louis Cardinals (Saint Louis wins two games to 0).
  • 1946 - Bob Feller is 348th strikeout of the season.
  • 1947 - NHL Pension Society founded.
  • 1950 - Philadelphia Phillies win National League pennant on last day of season (10th inning home run).
  • 1956 - Johnny Heckmann rides seven winners at Chicago Hawthorne Horse track.
  • 1959 - First World Series (World Series #56) since 1948 not to feature a New York team (Los Angeles Dodgers versus Chicago White Sox).
  • 1961 - New York Yankees' Roger Maris sets record of 61 home runs, last off of Tracy Stallard.
  • 1970 - The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Montreal Expos in final game to be played at Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia, 2-1. After the game, fans swarm onto the field and destroy it.
  • 1972 - First games of the World Hockey Association.
  • 1973 - Leo Durocher resigns as Houston Astros' manager.
  • 1977 - Brazilian soccer great Pele retires with 1,281 goals in 1,363 games.
  • 1977 - New York Yankees win second consecutive American League East title.
  • 1978 - New York Yankees lose 9-2 to Cleveland Indians forcing a playoff game with Boston Red Sox.
  • 1984 - Peter Ueberroth replaces Bowie Kuhn as 6th commissioner of baseball.
  • 1988 - Lowest batting average for National League champion (Tony Gwynn .313).
  • 1989 - Dallas Cowboys' Ed "Too Tall" Jones records his 1,000th NFL tackle.
  • 2000 - Closing ceremony of Games of the XXVII Olympiad in Sydney, Australia.
  • 2004 - Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners breaks the major league record for hits in a single season, with hit number 258.
  • 2006 - Brisbane Broncos beat Melbourne Storm in the controversial 2006 National Rugby League Grand Final at Telstra Stadium in Sydney, Australia.
  • 2016 - At the Road Atlanta raceway in Braselton, Georgia, USA, the Petit Le Mans race is held, round 12 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 1st in Prototype class and 1st overall is the Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 #10 Corvette DP driven by Ricky Taylor, Jordan Taylor, and Max Angelelli.
    • Finishing 1st in Prototype Challenge class and 5th overall is the Performance Tech Motorsports #38 ORECA FLM09 driven by Kyle Marcelli, James French, and Kenton Koch.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Le Mans class and 9th overall is the Ford Chip Ganassi Racing #66 Ford GT driven by Joey Hand, Dirk Mueller, and Sebastien Bourdais.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Daytona class and 17th overall is the Dream Racing Motorsport #27 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 driven by Luca Persiani, Paolo Ruberti, and Cedric Shirrazzueli.

  • 2021 - At T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, NHL pre-season game: Vegas Golden Knights beats Los Angeles Kings by score 4-0.
  • 2021 - At Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett, Washington, USA, NHL pre-season game: Seattle Kraken beats Edmonton Oilers by score 2-1.
  • 2021 - At Scotiabank Saddledrome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, NHL pre-season game: Calgary Flames beats Vancouver Canucks by score 4-1.
  • 2021 - At United Center in Chicago, Illinois, USA, NHL pre-season game: Saint Louis Blues beats Chicago Blackhawks by score 6-3.
