  • 1938 - Seabiscuit beats War Admiral in a match horse race at Pimlico.
  • 1946 - New York Knicks first basketball game, beating Toronto Huskies 68-66.
  • 1959 - First NHL goalie to wear a hockey mask (Jacques Plante).
  • 1964 - George Blanda of Houston Oilers throws NFL-record 37 passes in 68 attempts.
  • 1964 - Kansas City Chiefs' Len Dawson passes for six touchdowns vs Denver Broncos (49-39).
  • 1966 - NFL awards New Orleans its 16th franchise (All Saints Day).
  • 1968 - US pro soccer 14 teams merge into one all star team.
  • 1970 - First regular season San Francisco Giants-New York Jets game, Giants win 22-10 at Shea Stadium.

  • 1977 - New York Islanders' Goran Hogosta's only shut-out Calgary Flames 9-0-Trottier four goals.
  • 1979 - Edward Bennett Williams buys the Baltimore Orioles for a reported US$12.3 million from Jerold Hoffberger.
  • 1981 - Third meeting of San Francisco Giants-New York Jets, Jets up 2-1 with 26-7 win.
  • 1984 - Despite Mike Bossy's four goals, New York Islanders lose 5-6 to Montreal Canadians making Islander record when scoring a hat trick 77-3-4.
  • 1987 - 22,000 run in New York City Marathon (won by Ibrahim Hussein of Kenya 2:11:01).
  • 1987 - New York Jets retire Don Maynards number 13.

  • 2007 - Martina Hingis of Switzerland announced her second retirement from professional tennis due to doping allegations and injuries.
  • 2009 - In Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi, round 17 of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship is won by Sebastian Vettel.
  • 2009 - The FIA Formula 1 World Championship is won by Jenson Button.
  • 2009 - In Okayama, Japan, round 11 of the FIA World Touring Car Championship is held. Race 1 is won by Andy Priaulx; race 2 is won by Augusto Farfus.
  • 2009 - The FIA World Touring Car Championship is won by Gabriele Tarquini.
  • 2020 - At the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, in Monterey, California, USA, the Hyundai Monterey Sports Car Championship race is held, round 10 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 1st in DPi class and 1st overall is the ACURA TEAM PENSKE #7 Acura DPi driven by Ricky Taylor and Helio Castroneves.

    • Finishing 1st in GT Daytona class and 15th overall is the Meyer Shank Racing #86 Acura NSX GT3 driven by Mario Farnbacher and Matt McMurry.
    • Finishing 1st in LMP2 class and 28th overall is the PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports #52 ORECA LMP2 07 driven by Simon Trummer and Patrick Kelly.

  • 2021 - At Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, NHL regular season game: Edmonton Oilers beats Seattle Kraken by score 5-2.
  • 2021 - At United Center in Chicago, Illinois, USA, NHL regular season game: Chicago Blackhawks beats Ottawa Senators by score 5-1.
  • 2021 - At Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, USA, NHL regular season game: Tampa Bay Lightning beats Washington Capitals by score 3-2.
