  • 1944 - Boston Braves' Jim Tobin no-hits Brooklyn Dodgers, 2-0.
  • 1947 - Babe Ruth Day celebrated at Yankee Stadium and throughout the US.
  • 1953 - Wrestler Freddie Blassie coins the term "Pencil neck geek".
  • 1956 - Heavyweight champion, Rocky Marciano, retires undefeated from boxing.
  • 1961 - NFL officially recognizes Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

  • 1990 - Los Angeles Dodgers' Orel Hershiser undergoes career-threatening shoulder surgery.
  • 1990 - Villanova's women set a 6,000-metre relay world record of 17:18:10.
  • 1991 - Firestone World Bowling Tournament of Champions won by David Ozio.
  • 1992 - New York Jets finish perfect 5-0 pre-season for first time.
  • 1992 - New York Mets trade David Cone to Toronto Blue Jays for Jeff Kent.
  • 1993 - All 30 members of the Zambia national football team lose their lives in a plane crash off Libreville, Gabon in route to Dakar, Senegal to play a 1994 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Senegal (the most tragic incident to date in African football history).
