  • 1955 - Eddie Arcaro ties record of six Belmont Stakes wins.
  • 1961 - Norm Cash becomes first Detroit Tigers' player to hit a ball out of Tiger Stadium.
  • 1977 - Seattle Slew wins Belmont Stakes and Triple Crown.
  • 1982 - Larry Holmes defeats Gerry Cooney, retains WBC heavyweight crown.
  • 1988 - Galina Chistyakova of USSR sets long jump woman's record (24 feet 8.25 inches).
  • 1988 - New York Yankees' Rick Rhoden becomes first pitcher to designate hit (0 for 1 with an RBI).
  • 1989 - Youngest (age 17) male French Open champion and first US champion since 1955, Michael Chang upsets Stefan Edberg in the finals in five sets.
  • 2010 - (to July 11) The 2010 World Cup of soccer/football is hosted in Africa for the first time, as South Africa begins the opening ceremony in Johannesburg, with 32 nations competing in 64 games.
