  • 1931 - Cricket player Charlie Parker equals J.T. Hearne's record for the earliest date to reach 100 wickets.
  • 1939 - Baseball Hall of Fame opens in Cooperstown, New York.
  • 1947 - Babe Didrikson is first American to win British Women's Amateur Golf Championships.
  • 1948 - Eddie Arcaro becomes first jockey to win the triple crown twice.
  • 1954 - Milwaukee Braves' Jim Wilson no-hits Philadelphia Phillies, 2-0.
  • 1957 - Paul Anderson of US back-lifts a record 2850kg (6,270 pounds).
  • 1959 - San Francisco Giants' Mike McCormick no-hits Philadelphia Phillies, 3-0 in five-inning game.
  • 1967 - Washington Senators beat Chicago White Sox, 6-5, in 22 innings.
  • 1970 - Pittsburgh Pirates' player Dock Ellis no-hits San Diego Padres, 2-0.
  • 1981 - Major League Baseball goes on strike, forcing the cancellation of 38 percent of the schedule.
  • 1989 - Ben Johnson, Canadian Olympian, admits using steroids.
  • 1990 - New York Mets beat Chicago Cubs 19-8 at Wrigley Field; Chicago Cubs outfielder Doug Dazcenzo pitched a scoreless 9th inning.
  • 1990 - New York Yankees' reliever Dave Righetti becomes 9th to record 200 saves.
  • 1990 - Oakland Athletics' Rickey Henderson becomes second to steal 900 bases.
  • 1991 - The Chicago Bulls win their first NBA championship by defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in the best-of-7 series 4 games to 1.
  • 2002 - The Los Angeles Lakers defeat the New Jersey Nets four games to zero to win the 2002 NBA Finals.
  • 2009 - The Pittsburgh Penguins win the NHL's Stanley Cup for the third time in franchise history, defeating the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 in Game 7.
  • 2014 - (to July 13) The 2014 FIFA World Cup is held in Brazil, and is won by Germany.
  • 2021 - At the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix raceway in Detroit, Michigan, USA, the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic race is held, round 4 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 1st in DPi class and 1st overall is the Cadillac Racing #01 Cadillac DPi driven by Kevin Magnussen and Rengervander Zande.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Le Mans class and 7th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C8.R driven by Tommy Milner and Nick Tandy.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Daytona class and 9th overall is the Heart of Racing Team #23 Aston Martin Vantage GT3 driven by Ross Gunn and Roman De Angelis.

  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: New York Mets beats Los Angeles Angels by score 4-1.
