  • 1905 - New York Giants' pitcher Christy Mathewson's second no-hitter, beats Chicago Cubs, 1-0.
  • 1913 - New York Yankees win 13th game of year after losing 36 games.
  • 1918 - Philadelphia Phillies and Saint Louis Cardinals tie 8-8 in 19 innings.
  • 1921 - New York Yankees' pitcher Babe Ruth hits two home runs beating Detroit Tigers 11-8.
  • 1924 - New York Yankees win by forfeit over Detroit Tigers, their third forfeit win.
  • 1935 - James T Braddocks beats Max Baer for heavyweight boxing championship.
  • 1937 - Joe DiMaggio hits three consecutive home runs against Saint Louis Browns.
  • 1947 - First night game at Fenway Park (Boston Red Sox 5, Chicago White Sox 3).
  • 1948 - Babe Ruth's final farewell at Yankee Stadium (he dies August 16th).
  • 1955 - Mercedes racing car kills 77 at Le Mans, France.
  • 1957 - Ted Williams becomes first American League member to have two three-home run games in a season.
  • 1973 - Garvey, Lopes, Cey and Russell play together for first time, set record of staying together as an infield for 8+ years (Los Angeles Dodgers).
  • 1991 - NHL owners present contract to players (leads to April 1, 1992 strike).
  • 1991 - A spectator is killed by lightning at the U.S. Open.
  • 1997 - The Chicago Bulls win their 5th NBA championship by defeating the Utah Jazz in the best-of-7 series 4 games to 2.
  • 2002 - The Detroit Red Wings defeat the Carolina Hurricanes four games to one in the 2002 Stanley Cup Finals.
  • 2010 - Audi finishes 1-2-3 at the Le Mans 24 hour race, tying Ferrari for 2nd place among the most successful manufacturers in Le Mans history.
  • 2018 - FIFA awards hosting rights for the 2026 World Cup to a joint bid from Canada, Mexico and the United States.
  • 2021 - (to July 10) The 2021 Copa América, hosted behind closed doors by Brazil, is held, and is won by Argentina.
  • 2022 - At T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Minnesota Twins beats Seattle Mariners by score 3-2.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Francisco Giants beats Kansas City Royals by score 6-2.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Cincinnati Reds beats Arizona Diamondbacks by score 5-4.
