  • 1846 - In Hoboken, New Jersey, USA, the first baseball game under recognizable modern rules is played (Cartwright Rules); New York Nines 23, Knickerbockers 1.
  • 1867 - First Belmont Stakes, Ruthless wins.
  • 1938 - Italy beats Hungary 4-1 in soccer's third World Cup at Paris, France.
  • 1943 - NFL's Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers merge, (dissolves on December 5).
  • 1946 - First TV sports spectacular-Joe Louis versus Billy Conn.
  • 1952 - Brooklyn Dodgers' Carl Erskine no-hits Chicago Cubs, 5-0.
  • 1955 - Mickey Mantle hits career home run number 100.
  • 1955 - Philadelphia Phillies beat Chicago Cubs 1-0 in 15 innings, ties longest shut out in Philadelphia Phillies history.
  • 1963 - Charter members of Canadian Football Hall of Fame are chosen.
  • 1973 - Pete Rose and Willie Davis both get career hit number 2,000.
  • 1974 - Kansas City Royals' Steve Busby second no-hitter, beats Milwaukee Brewers, 2-0.
  • 1977 - Boston Red Sox set three-game record of 16 home runs, all against New York Yankees.
  • 1978 - Cricketer Ian Botham becomes the first man in the history of the game to score a century and take 8 wickets in 1 inning of a Test match.
  • 1985 - Reggie Jackson hits his 513th home run to move into 10th place.
  • 1987 - Wee Willie Keeler's 44-game hitting streak ends.
  • 1999 - The Dallas Stars defeat the Buffalo Sabres in triple overtime of game six of the Stanley Cup Finals to win their first Stanley Cup. Brett Hull scores the controversial cup-winning goal to seal the victory.
  • 2000 - The Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Indiana Pacers 116-111 in Game 6 of the 2000 NBA Finals, winning the series.
  • 2006 - In the National Hockey League, the Carolina Hurricanes defeat the Edmonton Oilers 4 games to 3 games to win the Stanley Cup.
  • 2010 - Scotland records their first southern hemisphere Rugby Union series win with a 13-9 victory over Argentina in Mar del Plata's Estadio Jose Maria Minella.
  • 2010 - Roberto Alomar, former Toronto Blue Jays second baseman, is inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. Also inducted are former Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Paul Quantrill, late Minnesota Twins' owner Calvin Griffith, and late statistician Allan Roth.
  • 2022 - At Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Houston Astros beats Chicago White Sox by score 4-3.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Arizona Diamondbacks beats Minnesota Twins by score 7-1.
  • 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Cleveland Guardians beats Los Angeles Dodgers by score 5-3.
  • 2022 - At T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Angels beats Seattle Mariners by score 4-0.
