  • 1983 - New Jersey Devils purchase AHL Maine Mariners as their farm team.
  • 1986 - (to July 20) Goodwill Games are held in Moscow.
  • 1987 - Australian Pat Cash wins Wimbledon, upsets #1 seed Ivan Lendl.
  • 1989 - Barry Bonds' home run sets father-son (with Bobby) home run record at 408.
  • 1989 - Mark McGwire gets 100th home run, second fastest (1400 at bats) (to Kiner).
  • 1990 - Zina Garrison upsets Steffi Graf in Wimbeldon semi-finals.
  • 1991 - In a unanimous vote, final approval is given by baseball owners for the Colorado Rockies and the Florida Marlins to join the National League in 1993.
  • 2004 - Pitcher Eric Gagne of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim sets a new record streak of 84 consecutive saves, as he gives up a win on his 85th game.
  • 2005 - Boston Red Sox left fielder Manny Ramirez hits his 20th career grand slam, the second-most in major league history.
  • 2008 - Venus Williams beats her sister Serena 7-5 6-4, capturing her fifth Wimbledon tennis title.
  • 2008 - Daniel Nestor of Canada and teammate Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia win the Wimbeldon doubles tennis match, defeating Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden and Kevin Ullyett of Zimbabwe 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3.
  • 2009 - Roger Federer defeats Andy Roddick in the Wimbledon men's tennis final, winning a five-set match 5-7, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5), 3-6, 16-14 for a record 15th Grand Slam championship.
  • 2009 - In Porto, Portugal, round 7 of the FIA World Touring Car Championship is held. Race 1 is won by Gabriele Tarquini; race 2 is won by Augusto Farfus.
  • 2009 - In Laguna Seca, USA, round 8 of the FIM MotoGP Championship is won by Dani Pedrosa.
  • 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats Colorado Rockies by score 5-2.
