  • 1877 - The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club begins its first lawn tennis tournament at Wimbledon, outside of London. The tournament originates many rules of tennis, including court size, scoring of a game, wins in six game wins a set, and allowing a server fault.
  • 1932 - Boston Braves football team is formed.
  • 1932 - New York Yankees' Ben Chapman hits two inside-the-park home runs, tying record.
  • 1933 - Frankford Yellowjackets sold, rechristened Philadelphia Eagles.
  • 1940 - National League beats American League 4-0 in 8th All Star Game (Sportsman Park, Saint Louis, Missouri).
  • 1948 - Satchel Paige, 42, debuts in majors pitching two scoreless innings for Cleveland Indians.
  • 1953 - Philadelphia Phillies' Robin Roberts ends streak of 28 consecutive complete games.
  • 1957 - American League beats National League 6-5 in 24th All Star Game (Busch Stadium, Saint Louis).
  • 1968 - National League beats American League 1-0 in first indoor All Star Game (Houston Astrodome).
  • 1969 - Tom Seaver's no-hit bid against Chicago Cubs ends with one out in the 9th.
  • 1971 - In the longest shutout in American League history, the Oakland Athletics' beat the California Angels, 1-0 in a 20-inning game.
  • 1973 - 9th Maccabiah games opens in Tel Aviv, Israel.
  • 1976 - Houston Astros' Larry Dierker no-hits Montreal Expos, 6-0.
  • 1989 - First time Wimbeldon has both men and women's final on same day.
  • 2006 - Italy wins the 2006 FIFA World Cup by beating France 5-3 on penalties. The score after extra time is 1-1.
  • 2017 - At the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada, the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix race is held, round 7 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 1st in Prototype class and 1st overall is the Whelen Engineering Racing #31 Cadillac DPi driven by Dane Cameron and Eric Curran.
    • Finishing 1st in Prototype Challenge class and 8th overall is the Performance Tech Motorsports #38 ORECA FLM09 driven by Patricio O'Ward and James French.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Le Mans class and 9th overall is the BMW Team RLL #25 BMW M6 GTLM driven by Alexander Sims and Bill Auberlen.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Daytona class and 17th overall is the Stevenson Motorsports #57 Audi R8 LMS GT3 driven by Lawson Aschenbach and Andrew Davis.

  • 2022 - At T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Seattle Mariners beats Toronto Blue Jays by score 2-1.
  • 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats Chicago Cubs by score 4-2.
  • 2022 - At Petco Park in San Diego, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Francisco Giants beats San Diego Padres by score 3-1.
  • 2022 - At Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Boston Red Sox beats New York Yankees by score 6-5.
