  • 1941 - Joe Dimaggio goes three for four, hitting in his 56th straight game.
  • 1947 - Bobo Newsom wins 200th game, first as a New York Yankees player and New York Yankees 18th straight.
  • 1950 - Single day 16-team home run record set at 37 (National League-25, American League-12).
  • 1950 - Uruguay beats Brazil 2-1 for soccer's fourth World Cup in Rio de Janeiro.
  • 1956 - Detroit Tigers and Briggs Stadium sold for record US$5.5 million.
  • 1960 - 205,000 (record sports attendance) see Brazil-Uruguay World Cup soccer.
  • 1960 - George Crowe sets record of 12 pinch-hit home runs with a runner on.
  • 1961 - Ralph Boston of the US sets long jump record at 27 feet 2 inches.
  • 1970 - Pittsburgh Pirates replaces Forbes Field with Three River Stadium.
  • 1985 - NBC is first TV network to air a program in stereo, the Major League Baseball's All-Star Game. National League beats American League 6-1 at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
  • 1987 - Don Mattingly hits his fourth grand slam of the season and ties American League record.
  • 1988 - Jackie Joyner-Kersee sets women's hepathlete record of 7,215 points.
  • 1988 - San Antonio (Texas League) beats Jackson 1-0 in 26 innings.
  • 2000 - An 1919 Chicago 'Black Sox' autographed baseball is auctioned for US$93,666 on eBay. The ball's autographs include "Shoeless" Joe Jackson.
  • 2006 - Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees records his 400th career save. becoming the fourth major leaguer to reach the milestone.
  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats Los Angeles Angels by score 7-1.
  • 2022 - At Petco Park in San Diego, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Diego Padres beats Arizona Diamondbacks by score 4-3.
